Hello from Australia!

Ive got a 1992 generic 486 DX from my school a year (and 1 day) ago, original hard-drive and everything. Over the months that i have had it, i have meticulously cleaned it out, tested it, and in the last week, i finally got the hard-drive to spin because i found a serial mouse for it 😀

But unfortunately... it wont display, the internal speakers fell off so i cant tell if theres a problem with the motherboard, there are two VGA cards, both will not display. And no capslock input on the keyboard. 🙁

I am using a relatively modern Vga/hdmi samsung lcd monitor, and it seems to be a little picky sometimes, but the vga on it is compatible with both ports. Should i get a era-appropriate vga crt? (which i kinda want to do)

Or am i just a nincompoop who had broke a 32 year old computer? Could you share me your wisdom?

No capslock means its not booting at all. A good start would be
- fixing pcspeaker
- measuring psu voltages
- reseating bios and keyboard controller chips
- taking motherboard out of the case and taking good front/back pictures

Thats some great advice!

To further elaborate on some stuff, heres some stuff i forgot to mention: The keyboard DOES light up when i turn the PC on, it just doesn’t light up after the pc turns on.
Also, lost the internal speaker last year, have no clue where it is, it was probably mistaken for trash.

As for the reseating of the chips, done the BIOS card- no display, about to try the keyboard card 😀

Will take photos later, thank you lots!

Oh, and the keylock is in the “locked” position.

What do you mean by speaker fell off? Can you connect it somehow? Anyway, measure PSU voltages as mentioned above and also clean both RAM and ISA slots with the contact cleaner.

Ok! Ill tell you about it when i do!
The internal pc speaker fell off when i was taking it apart to reconnect the LED power supply, it was actually HOT GLUED to the metal plate of the case (very weird case, even the motherboard doesn’t look right in that case), the wires connecting it to the motherboard fell off it as well, so. I just chucked it in a drawer, and i may have thrown it out during spring cleaning.
Sorry for not clarifying!
Honestly, I believe that if i dont fix it by new years, i’ll just offload it to a friend and get a nice old 286.

Could there be a chance that the motherboard is fried? I doubt it, but i am just a newbie when it comes to troubleshooting vintage computers.

Take a photo of the motherboard and PC Cards so we can help you identify it and help fix problems by referencing the motherboard manual.

Does it have an onboard battery, which could have started to leak?

If it's dual it's kind of cool ... 😎

I got you!
Also, i have a second controller ISA card (not pictured) which was also with the pc! (Not in it though, just came with) which is near identical to the other one in the PC.

You have to remove the cards and take a photo of the complete motherboard so we can help you identify it.

Motherboard manual link:
https://stason.org/TULARC/pc/motherboards/J/J … 86-G486SLC.html
And
https://theretroweb.com/motherboard/manual/30341.pdf

Attach a tiny PC speaker to jumper j12
And make sue the keyboard lock jumper j13 is removed.
And maybe get a diagnostic card too but first just try with speaker for error code beeps to hear what is wrong with computer
By counting the short beeps and long beeps.

You might want to add a coin battery too.
You can make one with coin batter holder and solder to DuPont jumper wires.
Attach to jumper j14 on motherboard.

For a 486 with 30 pin SIMMs, it's got the wrong number of memory modules installed at the moment. You either need 4 or 8, seeing 6 in that picture, leaving a bank only half populated, this may be causing hangups. So try removing the two next to the already empty slots.... but since that is labelled bank 0, we might have to move the set of four over from bank 1, some boards are fussier than others.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

1. Remove all cards
2. Remove all RAM
3. Plug in PC speaker
4. Turn it on
5. Motherboard beeps? If not, motherboard is dead

Or you might have to add a couple of sticks of RAM to get it to beep at you about a missing video card.
