This individual is selling a video card that can be found on the trash by the truck load for an insane amount of money

And this one is broken missing the S3 chip....

What does this person think is going to happen ? Some technician on a nuclear silo is running a server from 1995 that can only take S3 verge graphics cards and he is willing to grab the first one that show on ebay listing ?

This is why I am out of ebay already for 10 years, as a seller and as a buyer... ebay makes me sick

its not just ebay there are people on gumtree doing the same, there a seller by me that completely over prices things like computer parts, and sells absolute tat like an old fan out
of an oven thats covered in grease, just why? he just makes the prices up off the top of his head without even checking market value, and he's been posting the same old shit for the past 6 years. heres two items.

People are so greedy

Once I told my uncle that the biggest tragedy of humanity is ignorance but he told me... "no, it is greed"
now I tend to agree

I can understand rare items like voodoos being priced premium but I think some guys just list everything for crazy prices and hope some (stupid) fish will bite

And when stupid fish do bite, and it happens often enough, those who come after - both buyers and sellers - start to think that's a reasonable price... what else can they do?

Really, best to just vote with your feet, screaming into the wind won't change anything...

But we have a thread for this sort of discussion already:

I often wonder how much of these extreme prices are due to automated price setting. Especially for high-volume sellers like the one linked in the opening. They have over a hundred thousand listing, so I can't imagine much effort goes into figuring out fair pricing.

Automated price setting is also an issue on Amazon and in some cases has led to some hilarious consequences: Amazon seller lists book at $23,698,655.93 -- plus shipping

From the article:

The incident highlights a little-known fact about e-commerce sites such as Amazon: Often, people don't create and update prices; computer algorithms do.

I agree that that is a crazy price, especially when it's common and missing parts
... but as a general rule, you really can't judge the value of any specific bit
of old technology to some people!

I spent years collecting, and sometimes buying very old computer systems (see
"Daves Old Computers") ... while most of the modern world seems to think that
any tech. that'a already shipping is obsolete. you do run into cases where some
people value it (sometimes quite a bit).

I can't tell you how many times I've been contacted by someone who wanted
something I have on the above site. Sometimes offering a substantial price.

There are no "set values" for old tech. What it comes down to is:
- How rare was it?
- Does the buyer "need it"? (sometimes you have a company with a not easily
replaceable software package - sometimes old from companies no longer in
business, sometimes written by someone no longer around) -- when that system
runs on a specific "old computer" and it dies, they can be desperate to replace
it!
- Does the buyer have a strong sentimental attachment to that system?
In the case of computers, some people have strong memories of their "first
computer" and want to recreate the experiences of their "early years".

I don't these would be nearly as much factors with cards, but you never know..
