Long time Vogons stalker but just now made an account. I've decided to finally consolidate my Win98 and XP computers to one tower. Since I don't want to buy a PCI-E replacement for my Radeon X850 XT, I've narrowed my search down to using an AsRock 4CoreDual-SATA2 with a Q6600 processor, wherein I would use my ATi GPU when running 98 then switch to a PCI-E card to use XP.

My XP computer is total overkill with a GTX 960. Since I've read online about the other Asrock AGP/PCI-E motherboards having compatibility issues with PCI 3.0 and even some 2.1 graphics cards, I was curious if anyone could share their experience using a PCI-E GPU with the 4CoreDual-SATA2? I would like to use my GTX 960 so I don't have to go buy another graphics card but I'm not against it either.

I'd appreciate any tips anyone has to share!

according to the asrock 4core thread the max you can go is a GTX580, ive got an MSI board with the same VIA chipset and it wont even work with my GT640, tho i think its a PCI-e issue rather than chipset.

Welcome to VOGONS, nd110900!

Have a look at the Asrock 775Dual VSTA & Core4Dual thread - there all your questions should be answered!

The latest beta BIOS 2.20a is already flashed? If not you can get it from the ASRock page on my website -> https://soggi.org/motherboards/asrock.htm.

I’ve read mixed reviews about the AsRock 4CoreDual-SATA2, especially with using both AGP and PCI-E cards. Some people have had success with the GTX 960, while others ran into issues.

Thanks everyone fore the replies! I ordered a 4CoreDual-SATA2 but it's going to take a while to make it to me from Hungary. When I finally get it in my hands I'll update this thread with what I find testing various graphics cards out and any quirks I notice. I have a GT 440 alongside the GTX 960 to test the PCI-E capabilities.
