So far, Duke3D runs in 800X600, both sound and music run except for one thing. The sound is a bit scratchy. Has anyone gotten around this? Also, the middle button on my mouse does not function in Duke as well. Let me know if there is a fix for both.

Thanks

You already tried everything under the "BUILD Games" entry in the "Problem Child" list?

Pretty much. My current setup is geforce3 w/ CL SB audigy.
Im not 100% sure what settings to use, but sometimes i get this error message:

Loading VDDLOADER.DLL
error encountered during post-initialization (0xf0)
could not properly initialize, unloading. VDMS loaded properly, but encountered an error while initializing.

Depending how I start the game, this may/may not come up.
I made a duke3d.bat file like this:

C:\Games\Duke3d\NOLFB.COM
C:\Games\Duke3d\DUKE3D.EXE

Then i right click it and "Run with VDMS"
I get a quick dialog box that pops up but closes before i can read it, then i get the message above.
Any ideas?

Thanks again 😀

Ah yes, i forgot to mention. The game will work even beyond this point by pressing enter, but the sound is still really crappy. Music is perfect, but sound is choppy.

Hmm... try getting Ken Silverman's patch to disable reverb effects and see if that still happens.

Yes, it’s my fault.

Do you have your game setup and sounding perfectly?

Very few people would call running Duke3D in XP "perfect", especially when compared to it's performance in Win9x.

I did get better performance using the settings from this post:
showthread.php?threadid=917

For VDMSound: Dropped dma polling to 2/5, changed output from Directsound to waveout, changed latency to 30ms.

In Duke, 22khz, 8 voices, 16bit sound

Note that I was using the GUI launcher with the "brute force" trick.

ahhh cool finally got it working good.
last two issued that came up:

1) A dialog box that says:
---------------------------
Error
---------------------------
An error was encountered while attempting to load and display the Tip of the Day:
Last error reported by Windows:
0x0000007e - The specified module could not be found.
The initialization process will now continue.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
Then i push okay and it works fine. Annoying. Anyway to get rid of it?

2) Performance is kinda weak compared to that of Win9X (as you mentioned earlier) Is there anything i can do (besides upgrade my PC) to make the framerate be a bit smoother?

Thanks

Welcome to NT. I get reasonable performance at 800x600 with the audio settings mentioned previously.

Short of an actual source-port, your best bet for performance is Win9x.

cool. i just left mine at 640x480 since it seems to run a bit smoother.

thanks for all the help! 😀

Really there isn't any reason to run it at higher resolutions since everything that usually benefits from higher resolutions are 2D sprites. 😀 Anyway, good to hear it's happy. Closing thread: RESOLVED
