issue is described here, with fixed io.sys provided for 98, 98 SE and ME: https://www.betaarchive.com/wiki/index.php?ti … _Archive/311561

it's not entirely clear if 95 is affected by this - the article doesn't mention it and the time of this fix would just barely fall into its extended support period, but it seems it could still be affected.

also apparently, there was some bug in smartdrive that was only fixed in the version that came on the ME disc: https://msfn.org/board/topic/114868-smartdrve … #comment-763599

Thank you, auron! Personally, I didn't know about this issue but it's good that there's a fix, also. Even for each language.
Considering how many of us use MS-DOS 7.1 with large disks these days, this is quite important information! 😃

i'm aware of two more data corruption issues specific to windows 95:
- Memory Management Problems on Computers with Pentium Processors (179897) (fixed by installing OSR 2.5 bundled usbupd2.exe, update for OSR2/2.1 for some reason pulled by MS but it's here)
- Possible Data Loss with LBA and INT13 Extensions (148821) (should be fixed in OSR2 and up, otherwise here)

and another issue with UDMA drives:
- Computer with Ultra DMA IDE Controller May Hang (171353) (fixed by installing OSR 2.5 bundled remideup.exe, officially downloadable here, should work on all win95 versions; more info)

the first issue basically means simply installing <OSR2.5 on pentium pro or later is unreliable, unless perhaps the updated vmm.vxd is already incorporated during install. and for the second issue, it means that one should only use a single partition when using an LBA drive with <OSR2 reboot to DOS.
