This is a weird issue since I started playing the game on Vista. Back in Windows ME at least, the game would start with the intro always.

However on Vista, and till now on Windows 11, the intro gets stopped after running the game once. The "skip_intro" parameter gets added to cam.cfg automatically.

While intro isn't a big deal, why does it keep disabling automatically? What does the game see to make that change itself?

why don't you check pcgamingwiki for the problem?

that site has all the fixes, tweaks, patches and solutions for running old games on modern systems. Everybody should consult it before asking for help here because usually, people will find the answer there.

Except I have already gone over there, maintain things there as well and found no answers

anyway, probably this is the solution for you (from pcgamingwiki):

Videos do not play

Install NewDark via TFix

Method for OldDark users: Manually start the Indeo 5 codec
Go to <path-to-game>.
Rename LGVID.AX to LGVID.OLD.
Download and install the Indeo 5 codec from here.
Run the Command prompt as administrator and enter the following: regsvr32 ir50_32.dll.
After a few sessions, the last step will have to be repeated.

I followed that previously on XP and now on Win7, but I can't comprehend where they took it out from. LGVID.AX is a filter, Indeo is a codec. Indeo can work under filters like LGVID, or use LAV or ffdshow filters.

With this every video is disabled, not just the intro, because you have no filter to handle the video

This part never makes sense, nor does it work in Windows XP, Win7+ follows that as well.

Not sure about Win7, but you can simply install the relevant codec on WinXP. In fact, I think there's a prompt for that during the installation of Thief Gold when using the retail CD release. You may need to run the game's installer using Win98 compatibility mode, as it will falsely think that you're using WinNT 4.0.

I've recently done some testing with Thief 1&2 on my Core 2 E8600 system under WinXP, and they both installed and ran fine. You do need to ensure that affinity is set to one core, otherwise the games will crash. How they look depends on which GPU is used, and whether it supports 16-bit dithering as well as table fog (for Thief 2). This is without any third party fixes, just the retail version + latest official patch.

PC#1: Pentium MMX 166 / Soyo SY-5BT / S3 Trio64V+ / Voodoo1 / YMF719 / AWE64 Gold / SC-155
PC#2: AthlonXP 2100+ / ECS K7VTA3 / Voodoo3 / Audigy2 / Vortex2
PC#3: Core 2 Duo E8600 / Foxconn P35AX-S / X800 / Audigy2 ZS

The game works fine with 1 core, so does the stars and the dithering (3rd Gen Intel iGPU). The intro keeps disabling, which is not a case on Win98.

I decided to read-only the cam.cfg, but then the game is determined to make a temporary cam.cfg so that it can push its "skip_intro" line

I just installed Thief Gold on my i5 3570K + GTX 970 system under WinXP + SP3.

Works fine as long as I set affinity to one core. Intro plays normally, as do other movies. Graphics look like crap because the GPU doesn't support 16-bit dithering, but that's expected.

I decided to disable the MS shim and try it with Win98 Compat, but the skip_intro line is still added. Where is it even pulling that from...

On CD1 of Thief Gold there's a file called iv5play.exe. Running that will install the Indeo codec.

Try that, if you haven't already.

Indeo is already installed as I said. Videos work fine, and so was iv5play.exe executed... my issue is the videos keep disabling itself
