I'm cleaning out my old hardware drawers, and found some stuff I'll probably never do anything with. It concerns the following cards (16-bit ISA unless otherwise stated):

  • Pro16PnP with ALS100
  • AudioExcel AV310
  • Sound Blaster Vibra 16XV (CT4170)
  • OTI601 Mozart (with YMF278B = OPL4)
  • Avance Logic ALS300 (PCI)

So what to do with these? Throw them in the (electrical waste) bin?

You could try to sell them, either via Ebay, Amibay or locally.

Anything you can't sell or giveaway locally, you could post in the hardware giveaway thread: Old hardware giveaway thread.

I would only regulate them to e-waste as a last resort.

Why would someone post here asking if they should throw sound cards in the trash?

Just list them for sale somewhere that allows you to do so. VOGONS does not.

Now for some blitting from the back buffer.

For those saying I should sell them: I won't, that's too much hassle, and they're not worth much, if anything at all. It's not like I'm trying to get rid of mu GUS 😁. Thanks for the link to Old hardware giveaway, I'll take a look there.

Well yeah, if you don't need the ~$40-$50 or so that lot would probably sell for on ebay, then by all means give them away. Most of those cards are either perfectly useful for a retro DOS machine or are odd enough that a collector would gladly snap them up (like the Mozart with OPL4). Just thought it funny that throwing them into e-waste would even come up when there are so many here that would gladly SAVE such cards from e-waste if given the opportunity. 😁

That AV310, for example, is based on the CMI8330 which is such a solid sound chip that they've been used on modern ISA cards for retro gaming. I believe they have a 100% compatible OPL3 clone integrated into them and have SB16 and SB Pro 2.0 compatibility, on top of having basic DirectSound3D support. A real sleeper of an ISA card in my opinion. 😀

Now for some blitting from the back buffer.

Yor're right. You'll not gonna make big money on fleabay with these, so give them for free/as gift to someone who collects old soundcards.

These would be very handy for the many machines out there without sound cards bc they were former work stations or otherwise. I've used some basic cards like these in recent builds (that I had to buy on eBay 🤣) and have been quite satisfied with them.

You should give the cards away if you don't want the hassle of selling them.

Think all of the cards has some Sound Blaster Pro compatibility.

  • Pro16PnP with ALS100 - SB16 emulation, bug free MPU-401 UART
  • AudioExcel AV310 - SB16 emulation, accurate OPL3 clone, SPDIF I/O, bug free MPU-401 UART
  • Sound Blaster Vibra 16XV (CT4170) - SB16, simple and reliable design, many people has a soft spot for Creative cards, CQM instead of OPL3 (turn off for many of us)
  • OTI601 Mozart (with YMF278B = OPL4) - OPL3, wavetable OPL4
  • Avance Logic ALS300 (PCI) - Very rare, SB16 emulation, accurate OPL3 clone, should be less noisy than other ALS variants as it uses external codec

Yep, all of these cards have nice features and shouldn't be trashed.

Thanks all for the information on the cards. Thrashing would be the very last resort, so I guess I'm going to post them in the giveaway thread. I might keep the Mozart for its OPL4, all the others are of less interest to me personally (I have other stuff like GUSes and AWEs that I'm keeping anyway, and for my NuXT I have an new SB clone).

If you read the tread called "Sound Blaster 16 clones" that is pinned here on the sound section you will see that 2 first cards you listed are very sort after, both are considered good SB16 clones, which is way more rare than SB PRO clones.

Unless you are talking about Sound Blaster Pro 1.0 clones with dual OPL2.

But yeah, I would keep the first 2 cards and the Mozart card.

The first two are probably the best single-card solutions out there, so definitely keep or sell/donate to someone else who can use them. Not so sure about the Mozart card, the OTI Mozart is a predecessor of the OPTi MAD16 and isn't the easiest or most compatible SBPro2 wannabe clone and the OPL4 can't be used in DOS (at least, assuming it's a card like this one - there exist OPL4 cards that work in DOS (Logitech Soundman Wave, Miro PCM 12), but none I'm aware of with an OTi Mozart chip. I'd try to dump this and get a better (=DOS supporting) wavetable card instead.

Ok, I've made a post in the hardware giveaway thread. I hope I didn't break any rules, I'm new to this 😀.
