I want to run some custom "DOS" config.sys & autoexec.bat options like I used to in DOS 6.22, but under the Windows 98 kernel. I don't want to load a 3rd party dual-boot menu unless I have to. The long file name support and the kernel of Windows 98 (aka DOS 7.1) is good enough. I can't seem to find out how to do that though, unless I boot into Windows 98 first then shutdown to DOS mode. I'd like to get my menu options before Windows 98 loads, so I don't have to.

In other words, after editing the hidden msdos.sys file and adjusting the options to go straight to the Windows 98 boot menu (Normal, Logged, Safe Mode, Command Prompt, etc), is there a way I can add my own options? Like booting into "DOS 7.1" with EMS, CDROM support, etc like in normal DOS?

It seems a waste to have to swap out my core boot files (io.sys) with a boot manager and something like FreeDOS when Windows 98 itself has LFN support. It would be cleaner too right?

Have a look here.
How to create a boot (start up) menu under Windows 9x/ME

It's basically the same functionality and methodology as under DOS 6.x .

If you generate a bootable recovery floppy using the functionality included in Windows 9x, you will find it comes with a such a menu, which you can use as an example. The same methodology applies whether booting from a floppy or a hard disk.

May I recommend things such as more switches for EMM386 and other ways to enhance and optimize the DOS memory config?
