Hi everyone!

I'm new to this forum, and my name is JakeyZ (real name: James) and i'm 31. I recently built a retro PC for fun using old parts I’ve had for decades. It’s a P3 733 MHz (Socket 370) with 512 MB of RAM, an ATI Radeon 9200, and running Windows 2000.

The problem I’m facing is that I’d like to get a bit more performance. Even with Direct3D or OpenGL, I’m only getting around 70 FPS. I know the main bottleneck is the P3 CPU, but I’m wondering if there’s any way to improve the FPS. I’ve already disabled all options in the "Preferences" tab, such as coronas and other effects.

Ideally, I’d like to reach 100 FPS because my CRT monitor is capped at 200 Hz, and it feels a little laggy at times.
If anyone has any tips on how to boost performance, I would be really grateful!

I’ve tried overclocking, and I managed to reach 825 MHz, but it’s so unstable that Windows crashes and won’t even boot.

Apologies for my confusing English—I'm Italian, originally from the UK, but I moved to Italy when I was 4, so my language skills aren’t perfect!

Thanks in advance!

You forgot to mention which game 🤷‍♂️
Performance will vary from game to game, but "only" 70 FPS is pretty good for this PC. 30-50 FPS was acceptable for many gamers back then.
You probably won't be able to get much more out of that processor, it's not your bottleneck. Try a faster video card.

Sounds a lot like vsync than anything else tbh. What does MDK2 say?

It’s a P3 733 MHz (Socket 370) with 512 MB of RAM

In those years, the motherboard manufacturer and chipset were important.
If it was I815 and Asus/Gigabyte, then change the CPU and video card.
If it was VIA from PSPartner, then change the motherboard.
Only Asus/Gigabyte made fast motherboards for VIA.

733 Copermine should work fine at 133 bus if its initial frequency is 100.
Overclocking with bus with non standart frequency (75, 85 or any) is not a very good idea.
Start at 100 or 133

Conclusion.
The exact parametrs of the CPU, motherboard.
And memory read/write tests, for example from AIDA64.

If your 9200 drivers are 6.2, you could try the 6.11 Pre-R300, the XP/2k version is found under the XP option at AMD, not listed under the 2000 option.
Looks like the 733 is a 133 FSB CPU, do you have PC133 RAM with it, and set for 133 so it can do full bus speed

Its the next step.
VIA chipsets of that time were very dependent on BIOS.
3 pictures for motherboards with integrated video in the same conditions.

try UTGLR, which is an improved driver with a lot more options in the .ini. swapinterval=0 to disable vsync.

you don't actually want over 100 FPS in v436 because it breaks the engine. this was only fixed in a very recent fan patch.

I do have some news for you.
1. The motherboard without modifications does not support Tualatin. Bad.
2. The Coopermine 750 with an FSB frequency of 100 MHz will work almost 99% at 133. Good.
3. This board definitely has good memory settings. Good.
4. This board supports 4x 1.5V AGP, so you can install whatever you want. Even Radeon HD2600Pro AGP.
P.S. You need to install VIA 4 in 1 drivers.
When choosing installation, select "AGP turbo mode"
Turbo - 4x, normal - 2x.
This is a stupid nuance.
5. The prices of Radeon 9800 or FX5900 will shock you. I don't know, maybe you'll like the adrenaline shock.

Welcome to the club, dude.

In the office?
At least Radeon 9070XT, better to focus on RTX5090
FX5200/5500/5600->Radeon9200->FX5700->Radeon9600->FX5900/Radeon9800(impassible) ->GF6600->Radeon X800(850)(more impassible)-> GF6800 (incredible)

The office "IT trashbox" is a great source for motherboards, memory, and even Tualatin P3-S. But it's impossible to find a decent video or sound card, not the right specifics.
