I have to say that few things turn me into a "Get off my lawn!!!" old man more than the newer Doom games (Eternal in particular) and their fan base. It seems like they're doubling down, no, tripling down on most stuff I hated about Eternal: arena-based combat, where you are locked to an area until you clear multiple waves of enemies, overcomplicated mechanics (what happened to just shooting things?), focus on melee over guns (yeah, in Doom of all things), focus on the silly story and "lore" about the "Doom Slayer", and lots, LOTS of colors everywhere like a rainbow: the projectiles are color-coded to indicate which ones you must dodge and which ones you need to reflect back, colorful loot just exploding out of enemies like pinatas and so on.

Moreover they decided to go with some kind of "medieval" setting as if it was some kind of Doom+Elder Scrolls mod, bullet-hell style attacks, a shield (?) and sections where you fly on a dragon or pilot a mech (W T F ?). Because according to the designers this one is apparently more influenced by the original game from 1993 (?!?!).

On the positive side, it seems you no longer need to constantly switch between weapons like a child with ADHD and the soundtrack seems to have a little more melody than the continuous downtuned "chugga-chugga" riff assault of the previous two entries (but still completely devoid of the groove of the tracks from the originals, which was way more varied in speed and heaviness of the music).

Looks like I'm totally skipping this one, but I'm a fan of Doom 3 and its dark corridors and silly flashlight so my opinion probably doesn't have to be taken too seriously.

I'm a massive fan of the original - I still have my flimsy paper boxed full version I bought after trying the shareware release.

However I cannot get to grips with any of the post Doom 3 sequels. It seems you need reflexes of a ADHD afflicted child who is on a sugar high to play them; combo weapon attacks with grappling chain propelled melee based combat. And yeah, all the psychedelic bullet colours and enemies bursting into health shards.

It may be more successful... but it has definitely lost its way.

I doubt any sequel would be able to live up to Doom/Doom2 in my mind. I never got into Doom3 or Doom Eternal and I don’t for-see being sucked into the next version unless maybe it’s 4player coop or something different. It’s likely my fault, I’ve changed as a gamer since then.

I am looking forward to it - really enjoyed both 2016 and Eternal ... sure they got updated with the modern trends but that was inevitable
at least they were not dumpster fires like most modern releases nowadays, I have high hopes this will also be good

Doom64 on the PC is pretty damn close to being right up there with Doom2.

Doom3 was good right up until they made the god awful BFG version ...god that update was total shite, it got rid of everything that made Doom3 .. Doom3.

Yeah, despite not liking it myself I have to give credit to the developers for following their vision, and each sequel seems to be different enough from the previous one so they're not just rehashing them or, god forbid, turning them into live services or loot box fest.

I guess what I have more difficulty with is thinking of 2016 and especially Eternal as "DOOM" games. I didn't have a problem with Doom 3 going full-on horror style, but on the new ones there is sort of a comic book/parody aspect to it all that puts me off, I think 2016 did reasonably well with minimal story telling but Eternal seemed to turn into a convoluted mess and it seems they're following on this path. A lonely marine fighting demons that came through due to teleportation research gone wrong is my idea of DOOM, I'm not sure why there are ancient gods and a Doom Slayer that is like a Marvel super hero.

While I'm no expert on Doom lore, from what I gather, the Doom Slayer is the same Doomguy from the first two games (and Doom64). He got much more powerful over the years, but there's an explanation for that in canon.

Personally, I liked Doom 2016 for the most part. I haven't picked up Doom Eternal yet, since the gameplay seemed to go in a direction that I wasn't too interested in (e.g. too much platforming and rapid weapon switching). I'll still probably get it at some point (and Dark Ages as well), it's just not very high on my priority list.

I wouldnt say Doom3 was Horror . .it had a metric ton of jump scares which got overused to the point they had no effect pretty fast...

that said .. the demon baby things can fuck right off.

Yeah, I don't even follow Dark Ages. I think I saw only 2 or 3 concept art or early screenshot. Or the thumbnails of those on gaming news sites. I loved Doom 2016 and I think it's a good sequel or soft reboot to the old games. But I lost interest in New-Doom while playing Eternal. Which I never finished. I expect DA to be just more of the things that turned me off in Eternal.

Doom 2016 has the "hell yeah" factor for me, but not in the same way as the original Doom, and I think the story is kind of dumb.

Digital Foundry just released a video showcasing the game in more detail.

While they mostly focus on the engine tech, there are some impressions about the gameplay as well. For me, the highlights include having 30+ enemies on screen, and ditching some of Eternal's mechanics. From what I can tell, it plays a bit more like classic Doom.

id is nothing like the company it was back in the '90s so it's not really surprising Doom is more of a "reimagining" then any type of sequel.
People need to stop buying into the name of a game as some kind of series and treat each game as a stand alone product.
Although fully admit I'm also guilty of this, even collecting each of the C&C titles even though I've never gone past C&C2/RA2

I don't really mind the idea of arena style combat with swarms of enemies. Doom 2 did some of that, from what I recall. And it was basically the entire formula of the Painkiller games, which I also enjoyed.

What really put off Doom: Eternal was the platforming and Tomb Raider-style parkour. I don't want to have deal with climbing and jumping puzzles 'n stuff. Especially not in first person where it just feels extra awkward.

Never heard the new DOOM described in such a way but I have to say it makes perfect sense.

I played it a bit but I had similar feelings I never really got behind the finishing blow hand to hand moves they are both frantic and slow at the same time. Takes away from the shooting.

Sounds like the new DOOM has vibes of the original Quake.

I really should just go play the original WADs to completion one of these days...
