Hi everybody,

I recently got ahold of a W98-era machine, and thought it would be fun to get some era-appropriate software installed on it. So far, I've got the discs that came with the machine (Office 97 and "Streets 98"... very fun haha), but I'm looking for some other useful software or maybe just iconic programs of the time, especially anything that's unique to the late 90's. If anyone has any recommendations, feel free to let me know!

For reference, my machine's specs are a 600 MHz Celeron, 384 MB of SDRAM, a 256 MB FX 5200, a Sounblaster Live card and a 120 GB SSD, so plenty of storage. Thanks everyone!

Well...a long time ago, I had a Win98SE tower with a ~21GB hard drive, but only ~2.1GB formatted worked. So, I tried AppZip to compress some programs and decompress them on use, but it didn't work. 🙁 Instead, I used batch files and the console version of 7Zip to do the job. It worked, but I don't think I have a copy of one of the batch files and the computer is at my mother's house and disassembled. ;( Also, AppPlus is an enhanced toolbar and may be useful. If the system has multiple users with different resolution needs, try Carroll. It allows each user to select his/her screen mode and color depth. Try them out! BTW, sorry for not providing links: I have none at the time. BTW, try searching archive.org for "Windows 98 themes." They might be fun. 😀

If you're doing work on the computer, I created a program to handle and use template files called Template Creator. I have versions for DOS, Windows and the Commodore 64 and 128. I also have some templates for it, mostly code or emulation. If you want them, just ask, and I will post a link.

I typically install the following on my PC's, I'll list the last supported version of Win98SE

IE6 SP1, Not needed but doesn't feel complete without it
Windows Media Player 9, useful for my MP3's from the same era.
Office XP, Typically I'll just install Word and Excel, just in case.
Winamp 3.93, How I really play my MP3's both back then and now
WinRAR 3.93, It's what I used back then and still useful.
Deamon Tools 3.47, It's not full of adware and what I used back then.
Adobe Reader 6.06, I rarely install this but can be useful for game manuals.
Norton Utilities 2005, I install Norton Disk Doctor out of habit and Speed Disk is better then windows inbuilt Defag utility. But definitely don't do a full install!
Netscape 4.8, Rarely installed but it was around this era I swapped over to IE so Netscape 4x does have nostalgic appeal
