Wenas. I've created a windows 7 enterprise SP1 VM on vmware workstation pro 17.6.2 with tools 12.5.1 (latest) and 3d acceleration doesn't work, dxdiag even crashes. What's the latest version of the tools or vmware workstation with working 3d acceleration? Also i get the message "The virtual machine could not be changed to selected monitor layout." upon booting and if i try to open advanced screen settings windows hangs. May be i should try to move the machine to virtualbox. Since broadcom bought vmware seems there are many problems.

I've got 3d acceleration running in Windows 2000 using workstation pro v17.5.2 build-23775571. For some reason it can't resolve the update servers address, which actually suits me as it is working fine for my needs!

Funnily enough I couldn't get 2000 to install properly in Virtualbox, so tried VMWare and that worked fine...

Edit: apparently the update servers have been disabled so there are no automatic update any longer - yay!

https://packages.vmware.com/tools/releases/

The last additions I've tested on 7 and above were 12.3.0.22234872 w/ 17.5.0
Purposely not using any vmware products anymore since the Broadcom idiocy so haven't tested anything newer.

Keep in mind that Vmware could possibly have broken something. I had to do the following for Vista back in 2022.

I noticed today that Workstation 16 no longer has a Vmware Tools package for Vista and the one mentioned for download on the site via a KB 11.0.6 does support Vista but does not work with OpenGL since it requires Windows 7.

Read the following to download the last Vmware Tools for Vista and 2008 and for what you need to do for working OpenGL

Vmware Workstation 16

Vmware Tools 11.0.6 is the last version of Vmware Tools to install on Vista and 2008. (I did not try extracting the drivers and installing seperately)

It looks like after Vmware Tools 10.3.10 that Vmware Tools now requires Windows 7 for OpenGL.
Also in Vmware Workstation the "Windows.iso" no longer supports Vista with no WDDM driver provided.

To fix:
1. Download the last supported version of Vmware Tools and install
https://packages.vmware.com/tools/releases/11.0.6/windows/
2. Download https://packages.vmware.com/tools/releases/10.3.10/windows/ and mount this iso.
a. Copy the install files to your system
b. Run setup64 /a64 and extract to a directory on your system
c. Open Device Manager and point to the extracted folder VMWare Tools\VMware\Drivers\video_wddm to install the video drivers

Wenas. I remember workstation pro 17.6.1 didn't install on localized versions of windows but there was a trick to make it work.
I've also tried tools 12.4.5 and they didn't work so i've used 11.3.5. May be 3d also works with the latest hardware support but i don't know the equivalence between workstation and tools versions.

I reverted to the last VMware Workstation Player because it wasn't handling my hard drives well for some reason
