Has somebody around here tried Tyrian on a sound board that uses the Crystal CS4237B audio chip?

I'm getting heavily distorted audio with this game and audio chip.
WSS mode doesn't work (no audio effects), and SoundBlaster option works but with a very ear-piercing, heavy distortion on top of the effects.

So, any ideas, please?
I know this game is very "picky" with the audio, but it's also the greatest shooter to ever grace MS-DOS.
