I've noticed that a lot of DOS games I run on my Windows 98 PC has some very static-y sound. I've tested a few games and they all seem to do this. Windows games sound just fine, though.

I recorded an example here.

What do I do?

This probably won't help, but do the games work properly in DOS mode?

Give your hardware info

I wasn't sure if it's relevant, but here you go:

3.5GHz Pentium 4 CPU
512MB Ram
Nvidia FX 5200 GPU
160GB HDD

Given the new-enough-to-lack-ISA P4, is there an SB PCI 128 you're not telling us about? Those are known to have some crunchy issues with DOS games. The usual on-board audio for those P4s wouldn't have DOS support (soundmax etc).

Sometimes different drivers have a difference with their SBE driver for DOS, one really crunchy game i've tried was Epic Pinball

This info is incomplete, missing your soundcard info, driver versions, etc anyways, will be or integrated or pci, this for sure, this is not a good machine for dos games at all, sometimes vxd drivrs give best results in dos software, but are not best in windows...

ALS4000 PCI sound cards are good in dos and windows, oldest PCI creative are terrible, but live much better but deppend your chipset...

For simple dos games in this CPU use dosbox better

I don't have a sound card. Should I invest in one?

The first sentence is Greek to me. If it's a problem with the on-board audio, I guess I should get an external sound card.
