Hello all, user here named @iGREKKESS started post about Destruction Derby 2 multiplayer problem and I decided to start discussion again.

Old discussion can be readed here: Destruction Derby 2 Network problem under WinXP/7/10

And starting post 2016-01-20, 02:00 can be readed here:

"Hello guys,

I'm desperatly trying to find a solution to make Destruction Derby 2 network edition work on WinNT, since it's still a great arcade game to play on LAN/Internet.

Maybe you're not aware about it : there is an official patch (at beta state) adding network functionality to the Win32 version of the game.

If DXGL is a big help to make the game work properly on Win7 32/64-bit (even for dd2h.exe), trying to make the net game work is a huge frustration since it will never launch the race after entering the lobby... 😢
In fact, everything is working fine until entering the lobby (I tried with TCP/IP protocol and IPX, thanks to IPXWrapper), connection is okay, chat is working, but it is impossible to start the race. The F1 key needs to be pressed to launch the race on the server, but it has no effect.

I tried many things, SHIFT+F1, ALT+F1, CTRL+F1, all other keys, kill all other softs, bind F1 to a paddle button, or association of keys on the keyboard with several apps, nothing. It seems F1 keystroke is detected, since it has an effect on the main menu, but game does not "jump" to the begining of the race from the lobby.
I'm running the game with the original CD on two PCs, one running WinXP, the other running Win7 64-bit : same problem on both.

I've tested under Win98, using a virtual PC (the race can be launched even with only 1 player in multplayer) : it works perfectly 😵

Any idea ?
Thx in advance.

I recently attempted to make multiplayer connetion with Destruction Derby 2 and it is quite easy with modern systems. I encountered same problem with modern Windows systems about F1 to launch race in multiplayer lobby.
I got same result what iGREKKESS got. With modern systems it is easy to make multiplayer connection but F1-problem make it unplayable, and then otherhand with Windows95/98 is easy to launch race with F1 but harder to make connection where others could join to play.

I managed to connect host (Windows xp) computer and virtual pc Windows 98 system together somehow. Windows xp could not play and stuck to "Race in progress" screen. With Windows 98 I could get to race and other car was idling still.

Also here is video with bad quality about similar setting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkRZGj0MAug

I once installed newer directX to Windows 98 virtual machine and then same F1 problem occured, so I wonder if this F1 problem can be related to DirectX keyboard mapping with modern systems.

If someone can help me doing network connection with windows 98 and several other modern systems for Destruction Derby 2, I would appreciate it.

There is growing community of people who would want to play DD2 multiplayer online in modern days. If you are interested to join Destruction Derby 2 reverse engineering/discussion discord group, Here you can do so: https://discord.gg/cKzBve5F

I followed instructions from older post and I got multiplayer working with windows three 98 virtual machines, 2/3 were 86Box Windows 98 virtual machines and one Virtual Pc Windows 98 machine.
Tcp/Ip otion provided horrible lag and crashes but IPX connection worked very fine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXuOdzWbcUc

Thank you iGREKKESS and nrgoskewl for providing instruction to set up windows 98 connection for DD2net.exe

One note I made: I tried also connect windows xp and windows 11 machine as well to game. All I got connected but it seems only Windows 98 machines got to actual racing, in that sense car could been driven. Windows xp and Windows 11 got stuck to screen when host launched a race: "Game in progress".
