I have a Logitech G305 wireless mouse, and for some reason it is not smooth at all in Windows XP. It almost seems like it can only move in 8 axes, and it feels very rigid. Most noticeable is when I try to move the mouse down and to the right at the same time, the cursor almost does a game of snake because it's so rigid, it only moves straight right or down with any consistency.

I notice this issue on many XP machines, both laptop and desktop ranging from 2003-2012. I only use the drivers that XP installed automatically. Mouse works perfect in Windows 7 and newer (again OS drivers only), haven't tried Vista. I have a Steelseries Rival 3 wireless that works perfectly, so I'm almost wondering if it's something about the way the XP driver/mouse model interacts with the Hero sensor. Just curious to see if anybody else has this experience, because it is a major PITA.

Hi, I also use a G305 as daily driver and have zero problems on multiple XP builds. Have you perhaps customized parameters like polling rate on the Logitech software on modern Windows and saved them on the mouse internal memory? I just use it on its defaults on all Windows builds, your problems could be related to too high polling rate in Hz for such old OS or hardware, in fact even if on Desktop it works fine, some old games can behave erratically if the poll rate is too high.

It's weird. I don't believe I've ever even enabled the onboard memory feature on the mouse because I refused to install Ghub, there is a portable onboard memory manager software by Logitech, but it doesn't give me any options for the G305 which according to Reddit indicates that the onboard memory is just disabled outright. It shouldn't be causing any issues then. It happens on the desktop and in-game, it makes it really hard to use the computer. My G305 is fairly new, maybe there are subtle revisions and one of them caused this?

Apparently the default DPI values for this mouse are 400/800/1600/3200. I am using 800. It seems like the default polling rate is 1000Hz. This is the same rate as my Steelseries Rival 3, which does work fine in XP. Maybe I'll try to install Ghub and lower this and see what I get.

I did some testing with different settings and it seems like my mouse is either FUBAR or there's multiple internal revisions that for some reason changed something.

If I bring the mouse down from 1000Hz to 500 or 125, the weird rigidity to the movement goes away, the pointer becomes precise again in XP. However, it now stutters/jitters constantly during movement. It is noticeably laggy on a 60Hz display, regardless of whether it's at 125 or 500Hz. In games this is incredibly disorienting. Once more, Windows 7 does not suffer from this issue at all, the mouse remains very smooth even at 125Hz. Turning it back up to 1000Hz removes the stutters in XP, but of course then it becomes all rigid again. It does not make any sense to me. My Steelseries at 1000Hz is fine, and I have numerous 125Hz mice that are smooth in XP. I see no signs of RF interference playing a role, after all it works fine in 7. Mouse is on latest firmware.

was mouse smoothing an option in xp?

sorry "enhance pointer precision"

I built:
Convert old ASUS ASC boardviews to KICAD PCB!
Re: A comprehensive guide to install and play MechWarrior 2 on new versions on Windows.
Dos+Windows 3.11+tcp+vbe_svga auto-install iso template
Script to backup Win9x\ME drivers from a working install

Yeah, I disabled it (I'm one of the weird people that actually left it on, even back when XP was current) and it didn't seem to make too much difference, though the fact that the mouse always accelerates at the same speed does mitigate it to an extent. Most games that I tested aren't affected by the setting at all.
