Has this happened to anyone before?

I am running Windows XP on a Pentium 4, 2.8 ghz with 1 gig DDR2, and normally get download speeds of 80/Kbs, but just today my, connection has turned uber slow, to the equivalent of a 28.8Kbs Dial-Up internet connection.

What could be causing this? This has never happened in my 3 or 4 months of DSL. I am with CenturyTel DSL.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your DSL is normally only 80 kilobits a second? Why not just use 56 kilobits/second dialup?

Oh, 80 kilobytes - that's totally different (1 Byte = 8 bits, so 80KB/s = 640Kb/s, where B is bytes and b is bits)

Maybe Windows Update or some other utility is downloading updates in the background?

Try Start->Settings->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Performance. Right-click on the graph and choose Add Counters. Then under Performance object select Network Interface. under Select instances from list pick the network card that is connected to your DSL modem/router/whatever. Under Select counters from list pick Bytes Received/sec or Bytes Total/sec. Hit Add, then Close. Now on the list at the bottom, click on the counter you just added and look at the Last and Average numbers just above - if they're higher than a couple thousand then something on your PC is eating your bandwidth. If they're near zero then it may be connection problems between you and your ISP.
