Hello, everyone.

I bought a retro PC that comes with an ATi Radeon X550 XTX 246Mb graphics card. I read this was a budget-oriented card, and I’m considering upgrading it to something with more muscle.

The system is a P4 3000mhz with 1Gb DDR2 667mhz (which I’ll upgrade to 2Gb) and a Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 card, running Win XP S3.

It is worth noting that my CRT screen only has VGA inputs, so cards that only come with DVI outputs are out.

What would you suggest?

X1800GTO, X1650XT or X1950GT/Pro.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

Thank you.

I can’t seem to find an X1950 Pro with a VGA out, just the GT. Is there a big difference?

Remember, there are two kinds of DVI, DVI-D which is digital ONLY, and DVI-I which has the extra 4 pins and cross for a passive VGA adapter -actually, even an active adapter for DVI to VGA or HDMI to VGA is pretty cheap... 88p for the passive block and £2.19 for the active on aliexpress

All cards of that period have analog output via DVI. GT is clocked lower.

As mentioned, DVI-D only GPUs are only a thing after 2013 (GCN1.1 on AMD), and 2016 (Pascal on NV).

For WinXP, X1650/X1950/HD 4670/9600 GT/GT 240 would be good start (depends on price).

I found an X1950 Pro for a very good price and bought that with a DVI-VGA adapter. Thanks everyone for the help!
