I'm looking for single module of 512MB DDR3 RAM, like Kingston KVR1066D3N7/512 (www.kingston.com datasheet) but they are quite rare.

Nowadays, 1GB modules are easy to find. So is it possible to reduce 1GB DDR3 module memory size by half?
I mean desoldering memory chips and flashing SPD EEPROM.
Has anyone done this kind of modding?

Theoretically, you don't need to unsolder anything.
DDR3 is only accurately detected by SPD.

SPDTool + Typhoon Burner + HeX editor.
The first utility is designed to read/write SPD. The second is for searching for corrections.
You look in Typhoon what needs to be corrected, and correct it in the Hex editor.

PS
If the motherboard is ASUS before the UEFI era.
Re: Need advice on how to flash SPD on a 440BX motherboard.
Nothing has changed since the CUB-X.

Thanks a lot, I haven't heard of SPD utils before. It's great if memory size can be changed only on SPD side.
I'll start looking for 1GB-2GB DDR3 modules.

It would be fun to make 256MB DDR3 modules for dual channel mode.
