I was shopping for an HDD drive for my NAS the other day and was surprised that Canada Computers (national computer store chain) was sold out of most of the usual Seagate and Western Digital drives. My local store only had a handful of Toshiba drives in stock.

The store's sales rep said they hadn't received new drives in weeks and that a meeting with their head office hadn't shed any light on the situation.

I'm curious if anyone has noticed a shortage of drives anywhere lately? Is this a Canada specific issue or a symptom of something more industry-wide?

The other day when I looked at Memory Express they were running low on Seagate Ironwolf drives of all sizes, but checking right now it looks like they have some of the 4 TB and 12 TB drives in their online store. In-store stock is varying a bit, but it doesn't look like what we saw with the severe shortages in, say, GPUs a few years ago. WD Red drives are in stock too, and it looks like there are a smattering of Barracuda drives in stock at Memory Express's online store if you're not looking for a NAS drive in particular.

Perhaps someone in Canada is really hungry for storing data for generative AI atm.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

There are an abundance of obsolete nva arrays hitting the bay.

From what I was told all manner of electronic do dads will have shortages going forward due to Chinese rare earth licenses which block sale to much of North America

Alternators, big screens, hard drives all have non-resolved sourcing issues.

My guess is hard drives are just the first domino.
