i dont exactly have much for working small hard drives under 2GB, and the last spare i have is a 3~something gb HDD pulled from my Sont INT-W200CND Webtv box (which uses now an SD to IDE adapter.)

i havent powered it on but all the caps look good and should be safe to power on, but this was obtained from an electronics recycler in my state, and the CD-ROM is missing.. im hoping i could still use an IDE CD-ROM drive in place of the orginal and use that hdd pulled from the webtv box (yes i've long since allready dumped that drive to an image.)

I'm not sure how that recovery media works but just give it a try! you wont damage anything permanently.
Best case it won't care about the capacity and just recover to whatever is installed in the PC.
Or it'll just not partition the excess drive space. In which case maybe try partitioning the drive before hand so you can use the space.

Worst case you can not use a recovery CD at all. as we are talking about a 486 I'm assuming you want either dos or Win95. Both are pretty easy to install and this way will include a lot less bloat as well
