Hey,

I have this card in a multiOS box, XP/Linux works flawlessly even without a driver, since I went through some trouble to try to get DOS 6.22 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11 running on this machine I would like to have sound in them as well but now after a day of pain I start giving up.

The issue is not with the card being broken, it is the usual DOS IRQ problem. By default if they are allocated automatically (and all unnecessary peripheries are disabled: USB/internal audio/com ports/LAN cards) I get this IRQ allocation:

In this case as you can see the driver will not even load.

However I tried to trick around with putting the IRQ allocation to manual, putting the card to another point etc until the point both IRQ 5 and IRQ 7 are free.
I'm not an expert on this but as I recall this card loves IRQ 5. It is probably using one IRQ for the card itself and one for that SB16 emulation.

In this case the driver will load but none of the games will work.

I have another machine (although that is with an SB0100) MSDOS6.22, same driver, card is on IRQ 12 it works just fine.

Any ideas what else can I try?

Thanks

Yeah, you're trying Sound Blaster on "hard mode" with a Live! on DOS... The card itself can have an IRQ of 10 , 11 or 12. Leave the card pick whatever it wants! However, you need to make sure IRQs 5 or 7 are free for the SB16 emulation. Same goes for DMAs (1 and 5 usually). Reserving them (or setting them to ISA) in the BIOS like you did is the best approach...

Most importantly, please attach pictures to your message instead. This will help a lot! 😉

There is absolutely nothing, zero, nada for DMA settings in the BIOS. Shouldn't that be automatically allocated by the programs anyway? When SBECFG says DMA 1,5 allocated it should be allocated.
With the IRQ all the fiddling around what I can do is I put it in reserved or NOT in this BIOS (it's kind of new as this is already an ATOM CPU based system).

Anyway I can load the card with other IRQs after all if I put it into manual mode eg IRQ 11 worked but the port what it assigns is a weirdo, this DF00, that is on my other machine 0x300. Can't that be the issue?

what are your systems specs? (motherboard/chipset). also none of your pics are displaying, you mentioned an atom cpu , i have an early atom board with an intel 945 chipset which isnt compatible with sound in dos, even if you manage to install the card and it doesnt lock up the system you will have no sound, only option is to use SBEMU instead of soundblaster drivers, though you will lose general midi.

Not anymore: VSBHDASF: Fork of VSBHDA with Soundfont support
