have this CDU55E drive that works perfectly in DOS, including being able to complete a full windows install, but after booting 98se it's never detected. i'm aware of the capacitors on these being an issue, but is not being detected only in windows a known failure mode?

If it still works in DOS but not in Windows, it's not a "known failure mode" and is unrelated to capacitors. It probably is that after using it to install Win98SE, the entries for the driver (in config.sys), and the redirector, usually mscdex.exe (in autoexec.bat) weren't REMmed or just removed from those files.

Also, make sure your hard disk controllers don't have the (!) on them (sometimes removing the controllers in Safe Mode and restarting will fix that).

well, i believe the drive did work under windows at one point. also just swapping in another drive without changing anything else, it will detect the new drive.

the IDE channel that the CDU55E is on indeed has the (!), but i already tried to remove the controller entry and that didn't change anything.
