I thought I'd created a thread specifically for this, but it looks like it was included in another thread concerning some general problems I was having with 98. This particular issue was never addressed though.

Has anyone experienced the Safely Remove Hardware icon going missing after a while? When I first installed the USB drivers - NUSB33.exe - the icon appears and stays in the taskbar. However, after something else has been installed, usually a big driver update, it disappears for good. This time it disappeared after installing the drivers for the Sound Blaster Audigy 2. It makes it a bit of a pain for disconnecting my pen drive. And while I can go to Explorer, right click on the drive, and hit Eject, it's not always guaranteed to do it. I did it just and removed it and it still complained it hadn't been removed properly. It doesn't give any indication that it's done something. Even the drive doesn't disappear. At least with Safely Remove Hardware, or as Windows calls it - 'hotplug icon' - I had more of an idea. It actually tells you you can remove it.

I have tried completely removing the drivers and re-installing them, but it's never worked. It still doesn't come back. Is there some registry entry for it? Some kind of toggle I can use? Thanks.

ATM lacking any early W9x system up and running.
But I think you can toggle "removable" in system properties and the appropriate controller.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. In System Properties? Do you mean in the Device Manager? Thanks for the response, by the way. 😀

Yes Device Manager ofc =)

It was just a thought, i remember setting IDE channels with HDD's as removable and hotswapping (!) caddy-mounted drives in W95 back in the day.
Probably not safe in any way, but I never broke anything.

I don’t appear to have a lot of options, sadly. But under Disk Drives > USB Disk 2.0 there is an option for Removable, but it’s already checked…? I can try unchecking it. It also has one for Int 13 Unit, Sync Data Transfer, and Disconnect.

I'm really surprised there's no option to toggle, or something that can be added, to bring it back in the registry. I mean, the drivers are on and working and the device is recognised. Is there any third-party program that works with 9x maybe? Every single time I click Eject from WIndows Explorer, it always complains it hasn't been disconnected properly.
