I have an Aptiva 100Mhz Pentium that has been a fun system but while prepping it for use recently, noticed the voodoo 1 card and sound card were no longer functioning. The system was otherwise fine, booting ok and I was able to run games, Windows etc as the system has a built in Trident chip. I tried installing the drivers for several working sound cards and all complained they could not see the hardware, so I know its not just one flakey sound card but the riser itself.

So it seems the issue is in the expansion card riser. I am not an electronics engineer, nor am I good with a soldering iron...yet?

Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to troubleshoot this thing?

I really want to get it working again as where I live (Malaysia) these are SCARCE!

BTW apologies if this is in the wrong section. It is related to sound card detection but maybe better in hardware? I am new to posting so please forgive me if in the wrong location

Start by giving it a good clean. Isopropyl and a brush to remove dirt. Contact cleaner and magic eraser on the pins. Bit of contact cleaner in the riser slot as well, plug it in and take it out a few times. If not working after that inspect for any damaged traces (should be easier now it's clean) or damaged solder joints. Check the values of the electrolytic caps and for eany leaking/bulging. Last resort would be checking each line for continuity.

It's also possible the issue is on the motherboard side and not the riser, but all the same as above applies.
