I'm remembering why I never liked ATI and it was the drivers. I'm running a Dell P992 on an ATI 9800 xt and I can't do anything more than 60 hz. This monitor should suport very high rates for a CRT. I know its not working because the monitors menu lets me see the frequency. I can see the higher frequencies in the default adapter settings and I tried powerstrip as well, however the ATI driver seems to be blocking anything other than 60hz even though power strip says its say 120hz. Does anybody have a solution for this video card.? I'm about to sell it on ebay and go with an Nvidia already. Already had issues getting it to work with my vodoo 2 dissimilar sli setup and now this. I read there was a way to turn off plug and play in later drivers but this is the latest driver that didn't drop Win 98 support.

Are you going through a KVM switch? Sometimes my older cards will only do 60hz unless I plug the monitor direct to the card port. My GXm motherboard did that with the built in port until I figured it out.

The other option is to try different drivers, sometimes the earlier drivers work better than the later ones.

Another thought. My ATI 9250 has two ports, a DVI and VGA. Both do VGA if you use an adapter on the DVI port. I recall one port didn’t recognize the higher refresh rates, but the other one did. If your 9800 has two ports, try the other one (direct to the monitor of course).

The refresh rate could be limited by your screen driver. Try to select another one in device Manager.

Refresh rate is also limited to resolution on CRT monitors.

What monitor is it? What resolution are you running?

The resolution you are running may only allow 60hz.

i.g. 120hz @ 1024x768 but can only do 60hz @ 1280x1024

I am going to try all these suggestions. I am going through a vga switch box. My monitor should be able to do 120hz at 1024x768. I was able to modify registry and get it to do what I wanted but it would be nice if I didn't have to make these changes because it's Windows 98 and I'll forget how I did it in a year 😀
