Great news for fans of the TimeSplitters trilogy of games (and also for first person shooter fans who have never played these three games) - Timesplitters: Rewind has seen it's first release!

For those who don't know, the Timesplitters games are a series of console-only science-fiction first person shooters, named:

TimeSplitters,
TimeSplitters 2,
TimeSplitters: Future Perfect (the official name of TimeSplitters 3)

with the second and third games being utterly superb, with fantastic single-player and multi-player modes, plus very easy to use map-makers (simple level editors with full bot support), with tons of unlockables, built in challenges and some great touches of humour, etc. The first game is also a lot of fun, but it's much simpler, for example the first game's single player campaign doesn't even have exclusive levels, just a basic capture-the-bag game in the multiplayer maps.

Anyway, despite countless fans hoping and praying for a fourth TimeSplitters game, it never happened, as Free Radical, who made the game closed not long after releasing the fantastic TimeSplitters: Future Perfect.

And so a group of eager fans managed to obtain official permission to make and release an unofficial and free game, and have been working on it for twelve years now. To be honest, I, and I'd assume many other hopeful fans, had given this up as vapourware, as all we saw in those twelve years were the very occasional short videos showing very little. But a couple of days ago, the first public version was released!

It's an early preview version, but it has a lot of content, though the single player campaign so far only includes the campaign from
the first Timesplitters game (which is a million times less impressive than the brilliant single player campaigns from the two sequels), but it's still worth playing, and anyway, most people will be too busy playing the extensively definable multiplayer modes (with intelligent bots, if you like) to complain.

From the official website "Sorry it's taken us so long. We've only been making the largest free content video game ever."

Early Access Features:

28 Maps,
Online and Offline Story Mode,
51 Arcade Leagues,
32 Challenges,
96 Characters,
41 Weapons,
20 Arcade Game Modes,
New Game Mode - Team Elimination,
Updated Game Mode - Last Stand,
Online and Offline Arcade w/Bots,
10 Players Online.

And of course, if you want to play the original games, you can still either play them on a PlayStation 2, original XBox, or Nintendo Gamecube, or you can emulate them on your PC or Mac.
