This isn't a huge earth-shattering problem or anything, but there is a ton of valuable info posted here and a lot of times it relies on images that were pulled directly from third party sites or from temporary hosting sites like imgur or photobucket. After several years most of those links are broken, so old posts here tend to be filled with missing images.

Since we're apparently a bunch of nostalgic weirdos here on VOGONS, it probably isn't a stretch to assume that most of us STILL HAVE pictures we would have uploaded a decade ago or more, so we are likely the only ones capable of restoring the usefulness of posts we made in the past that have broken image links. The majority of pictures these days are attached to posts so this is more of a problem with posts from several years ago when more people used external hosting.

To make it easier to go through your post history, you can do this:
1. Go to advanced search. (Magnifying glass > Gear)

2. Enter a keyword that is relevant to any image hosting sites you may have used in the past: imgur, photobucket, tinypic, abload, dropbox, imagehosting, imageshack, etc. Or, just "IMG" since that will bring up any image embeds you have used (though probably a lot of irrelevant posts too).

3. Enter your username for the the author of the post.

If you think you still have any of the pictures mentioned in the posts, insert updated links or just attach the images directly to the post if possible.

If even a small percentage of the broken image links on this site can be restored it will be very helpful to anyone who finds our post when doing research in the future.

Historical preservation is a cool thing. Thanks for doing your part. 😁

Now for some blitting from the back buffer.

The collapse of Imageshack really did a number on the early internet. I still see broken links to that site everywhere.

Is this too much voodoo?

Ah, I forgot imageshack! I added that to the list of suggestions...

And yes, that was a huge one.

The same goes for non-image content too. Don't you hate it when you think you finally tracked down a post promising that elusive patch or whatever you've been looking for for days, but then they link to, say, rapidshare... Of course some files may simply be too large to reasonably attach to a post, but many aren't, and some might have been in the past but seem laughably small now. (Admittedly, this forum seems pretty okay in that regard, I've seen much, much worse. But still, if you notice something and take the opportunity to improve things even just a tiny bit, that's always appreciated.)

Twice imageshack screwed me.
First when links to .cc stopped working and again now it's blocked in certain countries (Can't really blame them for that though)
When I come across my old posts I tend to update the links, posting the file to vogons itself.

I've been meaning to do this for some of my favourite old threads but never seem to find the time and motivation. I like the thinking though 👍

Life? Don't talk to me about life.
