Hello!
I've had this problem since I bought this Dell monitor and I thought I could use it with all the video cards, old or new, using an adapter from VGA/DVI to HDMI. For example, I've tried the FX5900XT, this doesn't work, the resolution must be set 2560x1440 or something like that. Also, X1950 Pro, FX5200. Strangely, the FX5500 works, also the 9800XXL, which was launched in 2003. There must be something I don't understand here. Could anyone help me with some advice? Thanks a lot!

My best guess is that the graphics drivers for those old cards do not even know about such a resolution. I would guess 1600*1200 is the highest resolution it knows about. For widescreen formats I would guess 1920*1080 is a resolution the FX series would support.

1920x1440's been around for longer, if anything i'd guess from the adapter's fault it didn't EDID in properly and/or need to be externally powered to work.

I see. So you think the adapter I use might be at fault. It's strange since the 9800 XXL works great, but the X1950XT, which is newer and more capable than that one, doesn't show anything on the screen but this error right at startup. For these cards, I have to use my older monitor, VGA only, which works as it should. I've tried 5 adapters, all seem to work just the same. Or is it?

Also, the 7800GTX doesn't work with this monitor. It's strange. I've tested all the iconic video cards and very few work with this one. Maybe it's just the HDMI adapter.

I’ve had issues with monitors when the computer resolution exceeds the monitor resolution.
I’ve got a few monitors where you can manually set the resolution in the monitor settings.
And I sometimes have issues with hdmi adapter every now and then it decides it doesn’t like it and I have to reboot
