I share with you the extraordinary "power" of Windows 98SE.
Well, yes, don't tell me how it's possible, but with generic audio drivers, I managed to get modern headphones to work. The headphones work perfectly. When using another media player, the audio is audible. Only Windows Media Player refuses to use the headphones. In Windows, audio plays through the headphones, as does video playback with another player. Not to mention surround sound, which can be configured.

From the surround options:

With the speakers turned off, audio is playing through headphones. Enjoy!

As long as the USB device is a Class 1.0 (UAC1) audio device, it will work with the NUSB stack in 98SE. AFAIK this is most USB audio devices except some specialty ones.

So it's strange, because the manufacturers of these devices declare they are not compatible with the old windows.

They only officially support operating systems that can run the ASUS ROG Sonic Center software, but as a plain USB audio device it can run on other operating systems such as Linux as well (And 98SE with NUSB installed as you found out).
