Hey my dear Vogon friends,

I was fighting couple of hours with the mentioned board, as it constantly refused to boot. If powered on it would giva a post beep, detect all drives attached and even show ISA PnP device listing, but after that it would always just hang and freeze, not showing the POST summary screen. Also I could get into the BIOS setup with the DEL key and so far everything worked normally from within the setup screen. That made me very curious and mad at the same time, cause I couldn't figure out what can be wrong with this board, as it obviously wasn't really dead. So I went on trying all the different hardware configs, changing virtually everything multiple times, testing different slots for pci isa & ram, tinkering with all the bios settings and I wasn't really optimistic to ever get it running, but eventually there was the one setting making a difference: Disable External Cache. With the onboard 512K enabled it would hang, if disabled it would POST okay. Damn, that was annoying, as Duke would say. Okay, with that pointed out my question is, what can be wrong about the onBoard Cache and how can I fix it. It looks okay to my eyes, no broken pins or solder joints or something.

I'd check thoroughly the lanes connecting the cache chips + TAG chip (the one with -12 on it)
A really good inspection, continuity and whatnot.
The leads can get unstuck and hang EVEN IF they looks soldered you must check if they are still connected to the pads. <--- no joke, this happens more often than you could think 😀

Yes, they can die and replacing them depends on online supply.

Hi Nexxen,

thank you for the suggestions! Gotta do that indeed I guess. I'll be posting some pics if I manage to make some good ones asap.
