Hi all,

I have had this WF-192XG for ages and have been in storage for 6+ years. Recently got the card out for a temporary Windows 98SE 440BX gameplay session over this Christmas period but when I install the drivers I always get an error on the "PCI Audio codec" in device manager. No matter the driver, the PCI slot or even other motherboards (Pentium III, Athlon, Socket 7)

I've looked at the card and everything looks OK, no bent or shorted pins on 724 IC, the voltage regulator appears fine, the crystal appears to look ok. Anyone have any pointers?

The card was in storage in an anti-static bag for these years - wonder if the the YMF724 just died for no reason.

Thanks.

I have a Yamaha YMF-744 and use the drivers found on Phils Computer Lab here - https://www.philscomputerlab.com/yamaha-ymf74 … sound-card.html - (it also supports the 724), so maybe unistall the current drivers and install these, and hopefully this will work, otherwise you could try cleaing the PCU contact on the card or trying another PCI slot.

Fingers crossed you get ot working as they are great cards.

The drivers of these cards barf with more than 512MB of RAM, I remember I had same issue when I had too much RAM in the system.

Thanks all. Unfortunately its a hardware issue. Just realised its not being discovered as a multimedia device or even assigned a IRQ in the bios initialisation screen.

Did you clean soundcard PCI contacts with stationary cleaner/eraser after storage?

Need help? Begin with photo and model of your hardware 😉

Is there a regulator next to the audio codec, for example, 78L05 (+5 V) or something AMS1117-3.3 (at 3.3 V)?
If the driver is installed for the joystick, it means that the main chip is sufficiently live.

It is necessary to replace the capacitors at the input and output of all detected regulators.
And those from the PCI bus as well.
Part of the main Yamaha chip is powered directly from the connector.

Thank you so much the responses all.

I checked and yes there is a 78L05 regulator - just for good measure I reflowed the solder around those small regulators and capacitors as they appeared dull, also cleaned the PCI connector - and the card is now back alive again.

I am relieved as I thought it was dead and was expecting to buy a cheap one from eBay but couldn't believe the prices they are selling for.

Electrolytic capacitors rarely recover their performance after such heating.
And even if they do, it is not for long.
But now it is clear which ones to replace in a week (approximately).
