I'm really sorry if this has been answered in another topic, I did search, I couldn't find anything.

I'm not an expert on this but I've got a PII 400mhz with a fresh install of Win98 (se). It's got an ATI Rage Pro AGP x2 card, 8mb.

I've installed lots of different versions of the ATI driver but nothing seems to install OpenGL support. Direct3D is fine. If I load Quake II it works software only, selecting OpenGL causes it to stop and complain with a "No hardware acceleration detected" message. Doesn't matter what ATI driver version I try.

I thought there should be an openGL.dll file in the /windows/system directory? Nothing in there. Do I need to install OpenGL seperately or something? I'm confused as to how it's supposed to work 😒

Thanks so much for the help 😀

Are you absolutely certain it's a Rage Pro?

I ask because the previous generation Rage II had no OpenGL hardware support.

Use my ATi drivers and my OpenGL package, but better to download the Full package bundle for Rage.
You need only driver to use OpenGL, OpenGL package is if any of your OpenGL game does not run well.
You get DDraw/3DCIF/Direct3D/OpenGL/DVD hardware acceleration@ATi, not only Direct3D/OpenGL.

Unless I'm wrong, the OpenGl driver for Ati or even Nvidia card is not named "opengl.dll".
I don't know which trick they use, but the OpenGl lib has another name.

Even my old Rage Xplay PCI had OpenGl support.
Bad support, but support.
I would be surprised a Rage 2 doesn't.
I don't exactly remember, but I tried many Ati Rage card ( many "Rage", so difficult to make a list) with Quake 1.
Results were poor, as usual with Ati and OpenGl. Unless you like square explosions and 20/30 fps 😀
But OGL worked.

Just got back to my computer, sorry for the delay in responding! Yes it's an AGPx2 Rage Pro Turbo for certain, says it on the chip.

Thank you for your reply!

So, I downloaded the bundle and unpacked it. I ran the driver installation in the folder "5.40x2611x3D" and it all installs. The driver is certainly operating in Windows and D3D.

absolutely nothing from OpenGL though. Quake II fails and says hardware acceleration not found, and if I run the demo in your package called "D3D-OGL Bencmark" then that works fine for D3D and bombs out immediately on trying it in OpenGL mode.

Do I need to install OpenGL separately somehow?

I really appreciate your advice. This isn't really my area of expertise.

Use High Color 16bit at you desktop color and you are good to go with Rage Pro and OpenGL

Quake1
Its not hard to hit over 40fps without OC now, before it was harder to get it up there@RagePro.
Square explosions are gone with Rage XL/RageXC and you can get Q1 40-50fps if you just want.
CPU sweet spot is Coppermine CPU of any kind with SSE, better with Pentium3 and at 600MHz.
One magic option is to use multitexture and another is to disable bilinear textures at OpenGL 1.1
This is very old results and you dont need Pentium4, Faster Celeron or PentiumIII is good match.
These results are from year 2024 and i can beat those numbers if i want and get bit more scores.

Switch to high color 16bit at your desktop colors and you are good to go at OpenGL if you have Rage Pro.
Dont use 16 colors, 256 colors, true color 24bit, true color 32bit, use high color 16bit and then it works. 😀

Added some OpenGL settings here, in the bundle it had one OpenGL extra option as i member.
Benc or Bencmark use only for Bencmark (they can get your mouse or keyboard work strange).
Other options are more safe to use at Gaming (Fast is Multitexture/Max has bilinaer disabled).

These download has them, but not the bundle.

If you used this bencmark, uncheck one OpenGL option for fullscreen bencmark and you are good to go if high color 16bit did the trick.

Just quickly tried that as I head out to work.

And wow! You're right! My desktop was set to 32 bit and changing it to 16 bit suddenly allows OpenGL to work. I never knew you had to do that! I suppose it makes sense when you're rendering in a window but I have my Quake2 set to full screen and a lower resolution so I assumed it would set its own colour depth as it needed.

Frame rates are playable up to about 800x600. I'll have a play with the settings in your driver package after work to see if I can entice a bit more out of it.

Thanks so much 😀

Alaways use high colors 16bit colors for your desktop, it works well for all Rage Pro supported API-is,
at Desktop and DirectD3D you can experiment more colors, but sure not good for OpenGL and 3DCIF.

Use added OpenGL.zip and its settings or download only driver, there is OpenGL folder with those files,
i am using Fast and Max settings mostly and they work for me. PentiumII 400Mhz is good for Rage Pro.

At some point i update ATi3DRageProSoftwarebundle.7z package and add more useful items to it.
