I got an MX440SE, but I couldn't install it under Win 98. As soon as I loaded the drivers, the system wouldn't boot. So I tried Win XP and I was able to install the drivers, but 3D Mark (99-00-01) wouldn't launch, and the worst thing is that Direct X tests (ddraw and d3d) wouldn't launch either... Nothing 3D-related would launch...

I think it's done for, right?

Sounds like it, but you can try cleaning the edge connector or putting a fan on it,.

If that doesn’t work, check for bulging or hot capacitors.

Can you post a picture of the card?

Everything seems fine, even the capacitors. I ran some tests on the vram using Ultimate Boot CD, and it completed them. It's not showing any artifacts, but it's as if half the chip is off. As a last resort, I might try warming it up with air.

Hmm, there should be a cooler of some sort on that. Even if passive. If it's been run without, it may have got too hot and got damaged.

It has its own working fan. I removed it to take photos and clean.

My MX440-SE has a fan, how hot does the chip feel?

When running on XP how do all the clock speeds compare to my clock speeds, I used my SIV utility to report them, do Menu->Machine->GPU Information to get the panel.

I guess it's too old a card for NVCPL to report the temperature.

This seems to be SDRAM based MX440, definitely uncommon card. 😀 One of the slowest GF4 MX, granted, but interesting still.

Trying it in different PC also might help.

True, sometimes those AGP 4x cards prefer to be in an AGP Universal slot and can be touchy in an older or newer AGP slot. A motherboard with an i815 chipset is probably the most compatible.

Unfortunately, if it doesn't work, it loses a lot of its appeal. Maybe I'll warm it up later...
