Kind of scratching my head because everything I know to try doesn't seem to be working. I have this old Compaq Pentium 100 computer. It has an onboard ESS audio chip. It's confusing because in some places it calls it a 1688 and in some places a 1788. I'm not sure the difference, but I DO have the sound working in DOS (6.22 with Windows 3.11) with it. It calls up ESSCFG with a bunch of switches in autoexec.bat and then sets the BLASTER line and all is right with the world. Except the game port. Any ideas? There's options for MPU IRQ stuff that I don't understand what I'm looking at. Does that need to be enabled for the port to work?
When I run ESSCFG manually I can enable the joystick port. The "BIOS" (whatever the Compaq thing is) tells me the joystick port is there at address 201. But no matter what I do with it, messing with the ESSCFG line and the BLASTER line, I can't get a DOS game (Humans) to react to it. It's plugged in and I know the gamepad works because I put it on my Windows 98 machine (different computer) and it works fine in the control panel.
Is there something I'm missing? Do I need to load an additional driver?
