Hi, just heard about in on the FM radio and liked to share.
www.saferinternetday.org

English Wikipedia entry is missing, so I'll link the French one instead.
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safer_Internet_Day

It's an "Annual Digital Use Awareness Event" basically, with focus on the youth.

Best regards, Jo22

Kids should NOT be on the internet
Or use Smartphones with screens.

The safest internet device is the NIC in this thread - Guess the hack purpose... 🤣

In 2003, I voted in favour of joining the European Union. However, due to recent developments - especially the restrictions on cash usage - I'm hereby withdrawing my support. DOWN WITH THE EU!

Kids should NOT be on the internet

Parents abdicated parenting and governments had to fill the role. And so here we are: everyone is assumed to be a child unless 'papers, please' states otherwise. It's only in the last few years I've come to understand Reagan's nine most terrifying words.

Anyway, unfiltered interenet was how I was raised and I turned out internet.

Speaking of "papers, please", there used to be the ECDL, the European Computer Driving License.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Comput … Driving_Licence
And it just was what it did sound like. A computer equivalent to a driving license.
I think the concept was rational. People shouldn't be on the information super highway if they have no clue (like the parent generation).

I did NOT have internet access until I was in my 20’s

Even today I use Nortons safe web browser
Anti virus software and Safe search
turn off all file sharing.
Only shop reputable stores.

Change passwords regularly.

Back in 1990’s thru 2020 the internet was a mess
I think it’s much safer today with better web browsers and antivirus software.

When they talk about safety, they're referring to mental health, not computer security.

Social media has destroyed mental health and keeps getting worse. Children are easily impressionable, but it's also affecting adults who should know better. I don't know of any way to fix it besides tearing it all down and starting over. Social media (and reality TV - that isn't Internet-related, but it had a similar effect by brainwashing the masses into dividing themselves) should never have existed. Also, it's funny that you mention 2020 because that was the year that every social media platform stared their big censorship narrative while promoting hate instead.

In terms of computer security, I'd say things are worse now because web standards have allowed malicious websites to be even more invasive. For example, websites are allowed to actively block you from closing the browser window or tab, and a website can push notifications to the OS after navigating away or even after closing the browser entirely. To make matters worse, all of those malicious hijacks come from ads, and all major browser and phone OS developers are trying to destroy ad blockers (yes, even Firefox). I guess I'm going to need to go back to a custom hosts file like 2009 (when the major ad blockers simply hid the visible portion of ads and still allowed malicious scripts to run in the background).

My parents didn't let me have a computer in my room until I was working with a proper job. Before then, the computer was kept in their room, so I couldn't use it at night unless they were away on holiday.

But this was before smartphones.

Is this too much voodoo?

My folks were typical 80's parents. (You know, the ones lampooned by the simpsons?)

Even worse though, because rural. 😁

I didnt get a computer until I was 14, just because of how expensive they were. An AST Advantage 486, with 4mb RAM, and a scrawny hard drive. DID come with an aztech sound galaxy washington though! Good times, even if the integrated cirrus video was a bit on the sluggish side.

[Dad had a computer much earlier, but was a miser about it. An old PCjr, with only 1 game that came with the computer, but we played the shit out of it when he wasn't home.]
