Okay, so, this hasn't really happened before until now, but since trying The Longest Journey (the original 4 CD release) I keep randomly getting DDHELP and Rundll32 Illegal Operation errors. I'm not sure if it's because I'm using a Geforce 4 Ti 4200, the drivers I'm using, which are currently 45.23, and I've had no problems with them so far, or if it's because I've overclocked my Pentium III from 466 to 933. Again, doing that has always been fine. I've yet to overclock the GPU so it's closer to default clock speeds for this model.

When I tried to load the game, I was hit with one of those errors (I forget which now) and the system locked up, forcing me to reset the PC. I tried again, thinking it was just random bad luck, skipped all the intros and got to the beginning area, and the game crashed with the DDHELP error. I read online that setting the desktop resolution to 640x480 before loading a game should solve it. Tried it and was instantly hit with the Rundll32 error. System locked up. Reset. Set the resolution, loaded up the game, skipped the intros, played around for a bit, all seemed fine. Quit the game, went to set my resolution back to 800x600 - got hit with the Rundll32 error again. Switched off the PC.

Wondering if anyone else has encountered these errors in a similar pattern to this? Or specifically with this card? And what helped for you? Thanks.

First step is to run the software with everything at default clock speeds to rule it out. It may not be an issue but you need to remove it as a question mark.

Edit: Actually the P3 is running at the default clocks at 933 right? So it's not actually overclocked?

The default is 466(E), I believe. But it's capable of 933. The highest is 1GHz, but setting it to that still keeps it at 933.

EDIT: Okay, I set it back to default (466), ran the game, tested it, quit, tried to change the resolution - Rundll32 error and lockup again.

Sorry, not sure if you saw my edited post. But after setting the CPU back to 466, I still had the same issue happen. Not during the game, but after exiting and trying to change the resolution.

Did you try the same on Win2k/XP? Consider a dual boot; it helps me isolate driver/software issues from hardware related ones.

That's not really an option for me, I'm afraid. Besides, I have and use 86Box for isolating issues and testing, but I don't think I'd be able to replicate this issue and these errors. I'm not able to add the same CPU or GPU.

Tried a few more things, but still no luck so far. I tried checking/scanning for corrupt/missing system files, tried restoring Rundll32 from the 98 disc, used ScanDisk, which found and fixed errors, tried disabling/enabling certain graphical options for the game, reinstalled the graphics drivers, but still it always crashes when changing the desktop resolution. And the colour depth, for that matter. It doesn't seem to throw up the error before playing, but always after.

Only other thing I can think of trying is a different graphics driver.

I found on another thread a recommendation to use 30.82 with a Ti4200

Great, thanks. I'll give that a try. 😀 I currently have three that are recommended for this card, but I think one or two were problematic. I have 31.40, 45.23 (currently installed), and 81.98.

I'm also installing the game in 86Box. It doesn't have the same CPU and GPU, but I'll see if the same issue triggers.

Hmm. Well, everything's fine with 86Box. No weird crashes or errors before or after playing. Also, it doesn't appear that I can use 30.82. It supports the Geforce 4 Ti 4200, but I don't think it supports the Geforce 4 Ti 4200 8x. It was the one downloaded from Phil's Computer Lab.

Hooray! It does appear to be a GPU driver issue. Installed the first available for the x8 version I believe, which is 31.40. The problem appears to have gone. 😀

Nice to hear that!

Based on your specs, I'm assuming you are running 89mhz AGP?
How has that been holding up with the GF4 Ti4200? Because I also have GF4 Ti4200 8x, a Medion version.

Yeah, that’s what I have, too. A Medion. 😄 I presume it’s also running at 89Mhz. So far it’s been fine. I don’t think these models have the default clock speeds though…? So I usually have to overclock them a bit. I think the defaults are both 250Mhz.
