Hello all,
After a few years in storage, I decided to revisit this Toshiba T5200C/200 "laptop" I was given from a former computer science professor. He owned it for a few years before I took his class and then he gave it to me after I graduated. After he gave it to me, I ran into the main issue straight away which is the laptop will not power on with the onboard monitor plugged in. As soon as the power switch is flipped, the laptop will power on and then immediately shut off. The screen, power light and other lights will light up before shutting off.

Initially, I thought it was an issue with the power supply so I started to take the laptop apart. After I got the onboard monitor off, I turned it on by accident and it stayed on. The laptop seemed to POST and run through the memory check. The hard drive will spin up and the floppy drive will start seeking after a bit. It will beep a few times as the CMOS battery is long dead so it probably wants me to enter the BIOS and set everything up again. I should mention that I have been unable to get any external video from the VGA port in the back. I read there was a "hot-key" that was used to toggle between onboard and CRT mode but I have been unable to get that to work.

Long story short, I think there is something wrong with the monitor internals but I have no idea what could be wrong. This particular unit has the already rare color screen so any amber variants might not have the correct circuitry or missing certain parts. Parts and additional units have been hard to come by as eBay prices are well over $1000 in some cases. Someone is selling the screen alone for almost $300 which I'm not in the mood for paying.

I don't know if it needs to be recapped or replaced but I know the laptop works without the monitor and at least POSTs so if I can get the unit to output video somehow, that would be a major win.

I'm going to link videos that I uploaded to Youtube demonstrating the issue better. I apologize for the video quality as Youtube compressed them horribly.

This video demonstrates the laptop powering on with the monitor still installed.

I've located the service manual which has been helpful in some cases. The manual is mostly for the amber variant and does not mention the color screen or other features.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

For those who stumble upon this post, I managed to get external video to work through trial and error (fumbling through the BIOS settings).

After powering on, the laptop will POST and beep since the CMOS battery is dead. Press <F2> to enter the BIOS. Once in the BIOS, press the down arrow 6 times, the right arrow once followed by <F10>. Press <Y> and then <Enter>. If done correctly, your laptop will reboot and display video to the external monitor.

Due to the different BIOS revisions, this method might not work as the menus are set up differently. The newer Award BIOS requires more key-strokes so its more trial and error to figure out the correct combination.

Hope this helps someone.
