Hi all
I’ve been setting up a small Windows 98 SE box mainly to run some old accounting and invoicing software I still use for my independent consulting gigs. I expected it to run smoothly since the machine is way above what the software originally required, but I’m getting random slowdowns when saving client files. It mostly happens after longer sessions, especially when the system’s been handling a lot of small documents. Hardware is a PIII with 512MB RAM and a CF-to-IDE adapter. I swapped cables and even tried another CF card, same behaviour. I’m no expert on legacy storage setups, just trying to keep an old freelance workflow alive without moving everything to modern systems. Could this be a known quirk with CF adapters under 98 SE, or something obvious I’m missing?

Are you interfacing with any old printers or other hardware? You might be able to run things in a virtual machine instead.

I know you mentioned not wanting to move to modern systems. But a VM could run Win98 and your current software. It would also be portable so you're ability to invoice clients wouldn't need to rely on keeping 25+ year old systems up and running.
