Hey All,

I've created a new little DOS/Win95-98 Benchmark Tool (Works up to Win 11) that I'd love you to try.

It is primarily designed to test the performance of CPUs/computers running 2D RTS style integer based games (specifically Starcraft 1).

I always wanted to know how a Cyrix 6x86 compared to a Pentium would look.

So I've created this app and website to submit your scores. If you have a Cyrix or other interesting processor from that time period I've love you to run this on Win 95/98 to see if it works and submit your score online, actually any computer I'd love to see! Otherwise if you just post your score here that would be great!

You can download Win 9x version here: https://starrts.vogonswiki.com/downloads/stwin091.exe
DOS version (doesn't support online submit but you can scan QR code) here https://starrts.vogonswiki.com/downloads/stdos091.exe

So far I have tested it on my Pentium 100, 233 MMX and K6-3. It has both a non-MMX test and an MMX test.

I've created this website for it https://starrts.vogonswiki.com where the benchmark will give you an option to submit online after running. Similar to geekbench or something similar.

Keen for any feedback. Will open source the website and benchmark if enough people are interested.

Side note: The benchmark tool and website where primarily created used AI. I have been a software developer (although not to the level of DOS/9x) for for ~20 years and understand some people may believe this as Vibe Coding/AI Slop. That is fine but I don't want that to be the focus of this discussion. I'm trying to collect some data on Socket 7 machines. I spent approximately 15-20hrs to build the benchmark application and website/backend and am really happy with the result.

I totally want to try this with my POD83 (I'm a masochist like that), but I have another project on the bench right now. It might take me a week or 2 to give this benchmark a go.

Do you prefer the DOS results or the Windows results for documentation on the website?

I ran stwin07 on Windows 95 OSR2 and it's not giving me a claim code at the end of the run.

It also automatically declines online submission, I assume because I have no network adapters installed.

Would it be possible to run the benchmark, get the claim code and submit it on another (connected) computer?

Website looks great; I hope this really gets going.

Awesome, what machine did you run on and did you get a score?

I am working on an offline submit feature for DOS/Win without networking support, it will generate a file with the results that you can copy to another machine and upload. That feature isn't ready just yet but planning to add soon.

Thank you so much for testing though! It has been really exciting see these old machines run new code!

Okay this should work now. The existing Windows Version 0.7 already has support you just need to run --save-result=run.json and copy the run.json file to a machine with internet; then go to https://starrts.vogonswiki.com/#/submit and select "Signed Result Upload"

Maybe adding a "pause" after you submit your score, at least on windows.
Or have the ability to "claim" it from the program directly.

After the benchmark ran on my win98 test, before pressing "Y" to submit, I went in the dos box setting and disabled "close on exit"
Obviously it did not work, after pressing "y" to submit the score, I did see the "claim code" for like 160 ms or something like that before it went byebye!

Could not claim my score :p

Okay version 0.7.2 is out, this adds pause option after getting the claim score and some other minor fixes.

This does fix a larger bug with the DOS version, it was 10-18% slower than the Windows version due to how the timing was calculated (in the code the benchmark was running at correct speed, just the result was wrong), this is fixed now too.

Very cool! I submitted a couple runs on my main PC. It all works very well and the website responds very quickly to submissions. Nice job with that. 😀

Would it be possible to have a way to remove or delete a score using the claim code? I submitted one to see how it worked, and then realized I had another window open with a bunch of stuff going on in it. I ran the test again and had a much better score, so there is no need to keep the first one.

Now for some blitting from the back buffer.

Thanks for testing! Yes plan to create a user account system so you can manage them in future.

For the DOS version, have you considered doing a QR code submission?
When the bench mark is done, you display a large QR code, then you could do the submission from a mobile device.

The submission/project site looks very cool!

That is a great idea!

The challenge would be to fit the submission into ~3K of binary data or 4K of text data.

If you need to do authentication on the submission, maybe you could make the user log in on their phone before scanning the QR code.

I think that should be fine, I already have it saving as json so I think QR code will be okay.

Worked like a boss !

https://starrts.vogonswiki.com/#/r/94

Is it possible to get more info into the QR code with compression?

Is it possible to let the end users fill in missing fields manually?

edit: I just noticed that it still posted as "v0.8" event though it is a newer version.

Awesome! I haven't tried with compression but might be possible! I am planning to add user login support in future but will see how we go with that one. I must not have bumped the version correctly, I'll release a new version at some point.

Thanks again for testing! Was your machine a 5x86 or 486 and what MHz?
