Has anyone else encountered this when setting up the game in pure DOS? I did go through this thread, though it's for VDMSound - Pandora Directive

Nicht Sehr Gut's error is essentially what I'm getting when I try to configure the music - Re: Pandora Directive

Some of the codes are a bit different here and there, but it's essentially the same. Setting up the Sound Blaster for speech/SFX is perfectly fine, but no matter which relevant option I pick, usually Roland Sound Canvas or MPU-401 General MIDI, this is what happens:

The attachment IMG_5495[1].JPG is no longer available

I've tried several things. I've tried EMS mode, XMS, EMS without UMB, no EMS, XMS, UMB, enabling the sound card with Unisound, setting the CPU speed to default (466E), enabling SoftMPU, disonnecting the MT-32 so it's just the SC-55, and manually adjusting the SOUND.INI/CFG file. The game just gives me a black screen when trying to load it.

I've tried looking for a patch/update for the game, but nowhere suggests there is one. So unless a modified DOS/4GW file is needed...?

Try DOS32A (and rename it to DOS4GW.EXE) or limit the amount of memory. Looking at the error this version of DOS/4GW does not like the amount of memory in your pc (> 64MB?).

Thanks. I’ll give that a try and see what happens. 😄

But yeah, there’s 256Mb. It’s weird because I don’t recall any other game doing this. Not even Under a Killing Moon. Usually enabling EMS or XMS does the trick for memory related issues.

Different games can have different version of DOS/4GW, some of which can't handle certain amounts of memory.

It doesn't appear that DOS/4GW is in the game's directory, but I'll try dropping it in and naming it anyway.

Some versions of DOS4/GW supported the legacy DOS16M environment variable, so this can be also tried:
set DOS16M= :16M
This should limit DOS4/GW to maximum 16 MB of memory and it will not attempt to allocate more.

You could also try running the game with:
set DOS4G=verbose
And get some extra information, maybe they have compiled it with debug mode enabled in DOS4/GW.

Cool. Where/how would this be done? Would I have to set this is a custom batch file?

Generally yes, it should be put into a custom batch file before the executable that uses DOS4/GW.
For the first try you can simply type it in the Command Prompt before running the game to check if it works.

I just get a Bad command or filename.

Weird, which version of MS-DOS are you using?

So that is not a standalone DOS installation, but WIN98 running in DOS mode, it should still work but try running this just to check that SET works properly:
SET /?
Please paste the output

Maybe the OP got the error while trying to run DOS4GW. It doesn't come with DOS. It comes with a lot of software and should be available as stand-alone. I don't know where to get it as stand-alone, but try Googling it.

This is the same message that Windows 95's(Unfortunately I have no machine with WIN98 installed currently, so it isn't exactly the same version) MS-DOS 7.0 prints and the SET command works for me on that, so this is a bit peculiar.

Try the alternate syntax:

SET DOSM16=@0-16M

Sorry for the double post, but I forgot that this forum doesn't have an edit post feature.

Try running DIR in the game executable directory, they might have the extender named differently than usual, or statically linked with the program.

I think that option becomes available after a certain number of posts are made. I remember having the same problem when I joined. 😄

I did try checking in there, but couldn’t see anything it could be.

The second syntax did work. It didn’t output any changes, but it didn’t complain either, so I’m guessing it’s worked.

EDIT: The same error happens though, sadly. 😕

You’ll have to forgive the blurriness; it does that due to the lighting in this room.

I get an error when trying to run DOS32A - renamed as DOS4GW in this case.
