Hello, It is my first post on Vogons 😀
About a year ago I bought fully functional Optimus 5P100 computer with 100MHz Pentium 1 CPU, 8MB of RAM and S3 Trio32 vga card. Since then I almost maxed-out this ~1996 era setup leaving only one thing left, Voodoo1 accelerator card. I could buy tested and fully functional card, but for me there is much more fun in fixing vintage electronics, so I bought a faulty Voodoo1 card off ebay.
Initially this card seems to work ok, however a few minutes later glitching textures appear on the screen and eventually the card crashes. Sometimes it just crashes with no effects prior to it. After that the computer is still functional and I can jump back to windows, but the card needs full system restart to function again (just for another moment). It is not a software or driver issue. I tested multiple combinations and nothing helped.
Both TMU and FBI chips are getting toasty, but people say it is a common behaviour so I just added two heatsinks - still with no positive effect. Sticking flat laptop fan over ram chips to blow the air over those both chips only made these crashes more common, so there must be a mechanical fault somewhere. I inspected all the traces and solder joints under the microscope, used tweezers to check for any loose connections and found absolutely nothing.
Right now I am pretty sure it is a capacitor problem, especially around TMU or its own RAM bank. This card was already messed with before I bought it, and there are some capacitors missing or replaced. Also one ferrite bead was replaced by 10Ω resistor (FB6). There were a couple more capacitors missing, including C230. For tests I had to borrow tantalum capacitor from C226 and solder it onto C85. C85 cap was cracked and 2.2µF replacement from C226 turned out to be faulty aswell.
Some changes make the card more stable, some in opposite direction. Right now I am waiting for replacement parts to arrive.
Ceramic capacitors are more problematic because their values are unknown unless I test them with my LCR meter, but then I don't know if the reading is correct. I am also not sure if tantalum capacitors are all in their proper locations.
I wish there was a list of capacitor values, but the only one thing I found was a wiki page with values for Voodoo2, not much helpful.
If you can take a look at your cards and list at least tantulum capacitors values I will be very thankful. If you have a list of values for ceramic capacitors this also could come in handy. Some resistors on my board also seem missing or replaced by someone else, so it also could be helpful.
Thank you for any support.
