For my machine, a Dell Dimension E520 with a Pentium D 2.8 GHz, 3.07 GB RAM, and an nVidia GeForce 8400 GS, what would be good platformers or puzzle games, considering the last timed I tried to find any, I turned out with only one good one, that being Portal 1.

Watch the capacitors on that machine

Your machine is well past the era of the great PC puzzle and platform games (ask if you want some recommendations for those as well), but I will recommend one that may be a bit of a hidden gem and also is a bit of both...

Oh are we talking 3d puzzle games? Portal was the first of its kind. But if we are talking 2d, I remember playing "Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords" maybe 20 years ago. It was cool. it should run I suppose.

I enjoy Boppin. It has good graphics and usual game music and plot: you have to free all the monsters hidden in blocks by throwing other blocks.

I recommend you try www.dosgamesarchive.com. It has a lot of good games. BTW, I also like Duke Nukem 1 and 2, the Keen series, Jazz Jackrabbit and Alien Carnage.

I already tried Rayman, but setting up dosbox-x to play rayman because 95 compatibility on XP sucks for dos games. Rayman 2 also hates when I try and get it to work. And 2D puzzle games (e.g. Microsoft Cheese Terminator) work too, I just prefer not wrestling with Windows just to play puzzle game that might not be good. I did try stuff like Jersey Devil, which is a good platformer, if a little buggy. And Donald Duck: Going Qu@ckers wouldn't work either. Same with SADX 2004. Suggest what you want, and I'll try it.

That's not really a 2D gaming machine. It's squarely in the realm of the 3D FPS era.

Puzzle genre kinda spun off into walmart grandma games by then. Which can be diverting, but nobody seems to review them, can probably find a handful at thrifts though.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.
