Socket 370 - Aiming For The Stars

Inspired by supercordo's Netburst and 462 threads, I figured I would go ahead and do one for Socket 370 as well.

Mandatory:
- results must include the following - 3DMark scores, CPU-Z, and GPU-Z (*1)
- Intel Socket 370 only. Slotkets and Socket converters (e.g Socket 370 to Socket 8, like the Powerleap PL-ProII) are accepted as well, original Slot 1 models are not. As long as it uses a Intel 370 chip, it qualifies.
- Unfortunately no VIA/Cyrix chips for this thread. There is an existing "Aiming For The Stars" thread for VIA C3 , made by Jasin Natael, and it seems active. (last post is a few days ago.).
- no chipset restrictions. Go WILD!
- no GPU restrictions
- no OS restrictions
- no LN2/sub-zero solutions allowed. Air and watercooling is accepted, as well as using ice as watercooling.
- NO STOCK SCORES! That's what "Aiming For The Stars" is about! Squeezing the absolute juice outta yer chips.

Scores will be divided into each core category - Mendocino, Coppermine, Tualatin. The type of 370 CPU will be mentioned - Celeron or Pentium III, as well whether it's a slotket, socket adapter or plain 370.

*1 - In case you cannot run GPU-Z, HWINFO or Everest Home Edition can be used for the GPU information, as long as they don't block the CPU-Z and 3DMark score view. This applies for 9x mostly, as IIRC there aren't 9x-compatible versions of GPU-Z.

I did mention that it's only for Intel CPUs, as there already exists a separate C3 Aiming For The Stars thread (linked in the original post, although it's in the Video section, of all places).

3Dmark 99 for my s370 SFF build. (not shown in Marvin's system specs yet ...)

My Celeron 500 (tiny OC @ 513 Mhz with FSB 68MHz).
Onboard Ati Rage Pro Turbo AGP 2x.

For 3Dmark2000, it's just too slow...

Until someone comes along with a TUSL2-C fitted with an overclocked Pentium 3S processor (1.4 GHz) running at a bus speed of 166+ MHz.
Or a similar motherboard from Abit.
I’ll stick with my AOpen MX3S for now. Unfortunately, it supports the frequency combinations 133/133, 150/150 and 166/125 (this motherboard does not support 166/166)

Added to the scoreboard.

I have my ST6 that runs a 1.13 @ 186FSB that I intended posting last night but, for whatever reason the 7600GS I picked up recently seems to not be 100% stable, so I will postpone it until I get hold of a X1950Pro I ordered recently. I also have a 7800GS however it acts the same as 7600GS, which leads me to believe it's either a driver issue or some sensibility between the OC, the late HSI-bridged nVidias and the i815EP chipset, since I rememeber I could finish runs with a Rialto'd X800GTO and a native X850.

What I can say about the ST6 and 1.13 Tually I have though, is the 186FSB is its absolute stable limit. I've done everything possible to push it close to 190, but 186-188ish is its utmost limit. Either core or the MB are at their limit but I couldn't get another S type Tualatin to test.

I might pick up a SA6R for Coppers down the road though - someone sells one that is in need of a recap with a 1GHz P3 and it seems tempting.

(edited as I misremembered the max FSB I got my 1.13 at. I always thought it was 189 yet I recall 3DMark wouldn't finish at that, or anything past 188.)

Yes, with a this Clock IC like that on the motherboard, you can achieve high results.

oh, I would so like to participate in this one as I have 3 interesting machines to run, to make everyone go crazy 😁
- Abit BP6 with 2 366s at 535-550MHz and a lot of RAM (768MB)
- Chaintech 6VIA5T with Tualeron 1.2GHZ and
- IBM x232 eServer with dual P3S 1.4GHz and only a PCI slot, which could take a Nvidia GT520/GT610
..but I need to dig all up from my storage - my favourite era of retro gaming 😁

I gave it my best with what I have. Soyo 7VTA-B, a 1000 Coppermine, and a couple of different video cards. My best 3D 2001 score was with the X800, but my Ti 4600 scored slightly higher on 99 and 2000. The overclocking options are limited - the next higher setting for the FSB is 155 but at that speed it will blue screen Windows 2000 no matter what I set the voltage to.

Next up: a Tualatin 1266 (one with an adapter) in a Tyan S1854. I had some issues getting this going and the cure was odd. I have two of these boards - one has no onboard sound and an ISA slot, the other has a Creative sound chip and no ISA slot. I had tried this Tualatin in both boards and it worked fine, but when I had it in the one with onboard sound it would restart just as it was finishing up installing Windows 2000 and XP. I thought maybe it was because the BIOS didn't fully recognize it, so I ran the BIOS Patcher, and now the CPU is recognized but the problem remained. I disabled the onboard sound, and it worked fine? I then put in a Coppermine 650, and it worked fine with the onboard sound but it would not make it to the desktop with the Tualatin and the onboard sound enabled. I realized that I hadn't had this issue before because the other board doesn't have it, and when I used it in this board prior to this I had a sound card installed. So I again disabled the onboard sound and installed a Creative CT4670.

Sadly, this Tyan board has no overclocking options so I had to resort to using CPUFSB; luckily, the stock core voltage allows it to hit 1,372 MHz. The next jump is from 144 to 150 FSB and that's too much for it.

That is the first time I've ever successfully used a bit software to overclock the FSB. I've had bad luck in that the times before the clock chip wasn't included or it couldn't be accessed by software, but it worked like a charm this time.

Same as before, the highest 3d 2000 score is with the Ti 4600.

Worth mentioning is the memory, Kingston KVR133X64C3 - the 512 meg stick I have handles 144 MHz with tight timings (though CAS 3) at default voltage. Most of the generic PC133 I have falls short of this.

Interestingly I installed Win98 on the same hardware and the 3D 99 and 2001 scores were notably lower, but the 3D 2000 score was almost identical. Same video driver (45.23) slightly different Via drivers ( 4.35 for Win 98 4.43 for 2000). Not the result I was expecting.

RAM chips from Hynix?
In my opinion, their PC133 chips aren't good for overclocking.
To be successful, you need a motherboard that supports 166/166 (FSB/RAM) and memory that can run 5-2-2-2 at that frequency.
With high-end Pentium 3 processors, increasing the core frequency no longer yields significant gains; the FSB becomes the limiting factor.

This is likely why 1.4–1.5 GHz is the official limit for these cores.
