With the release of Marco Pistella's X-VESA 2.0.0 ([Release] X-VESA 2.0 Public Beta – Deep VESA diagnostics for real DOS hardware) we now have a great tool to test VESA compatibility of our graphics cards.
That left me wondering, how about what came before? How to test VGA compatibility?
Then I remembered that Checkit 3.0 has a series of video tests which turned out to be just what I was looking for.
As a reminder, here are the different video modes from the IBM documentation:
So, I tested some of my computers with it and here are the results:
I purposefully tested old and new hardware, to see how VGA compatibility was kept through the years.
It will be interesting to see more results from you.
