Been having a lot of sound issues in my life latly so wondering if anyone has any ideas on this one.

Putting together a Slot A Windows 98 build. The board I'm using is a Soyo SY-K7VIA. The issue I'm having is that when I try to install a sound card I get Windows sounds like the login startup chime and clocks on folders but when I run a game I get nothing. I've tried three different sound cards as well as various VIA chipset drivers and am having the same issue. there are no conflicts or issues in Device Manager and I have disabled the built-in sound via the BIOS.

any ideas?

Hi,

Have you tried non-game audio applications like Media Player? If it just games it is possible that it is a broken DirectSound installation.

Hmm, if the MIDI file works but MP3 playback in Windows Media Player fails with a "no audio device found" error that means the MIDI device driver works properly, but most likely the normal Audio Driver have some issues, maybe something got wrong during the installation or there is a resource conflict.

As a first step, can you post how the device looks like in the Device Manager?
