The first Neverwinter Nights game supported a plethora of audio technologies, including A3D 2.0.

I read a couple comments here on Audiogon citing problems with its implementation, as well as a couple comments on other forums saying it was good.

I figure perhaps it’s a matter of driver version? Or DX version? Or game version?

I wanted to ask here if people tried it and what was their experience with it.

Which Neverwinter Nights?

The actual first Neverwinter Nights from SSI and AOL in 1991 which was a AD&D MMO based on the SSI Gold Box engine?
Or the Bioware Neverwinter Nights from 2002?

Ah, I was unaware of the 1991 game 😅

I meant BioWare’s NWN.

While I haven't tried this game on my Vortex 2, it should be noted that Aureal closed its doors in September of 2000. That's almost two years before Neverwinter Nights was released. So it's debatable how much effort went into supporting A3D, aside from simply using the library provided by the Miles Sound System, which that game uses.

Furthermore, in order for A3D to work properly, you have to use Win9x, as support is pretty much non-existent under Win2K/XP. And playing Neverwinter Nights on Win9x compatible hardware (CPU and GPU) is suboptimal, especially if you install the expansions which make the game more demanding. It should be fine if you stick to moderate resolutions like 1024x768 and don't crank up AA/AF, but I personally wouldn't play the game like that.

I wanted to play it on a Radeon 8500 to use TruForm and that build will have an Aureal sound card, so I figured I could avail myself of it.

I can always play it at higher resolutions on the other build with EAX, but I was curious about TruForm.

I tried that briefly a few years ago, and found the effect to be very subtle in Neverwinter Nights. You can see my screenshots here.
