This release of mTCP is mostly a maintenance release; there are small fixes and improvements throughout the networking library and programs. The exception to this is the NetDrive device driver, which has received major improvements for performance and function.
The networking library has subtle changes to improve flow control and retry behavior. Many trace points have been changed to make them easier to interpret. Programs are generally slightly smaller with no loss of performance or function.
The timing technique used by Ping has been changed to improve timing accuracy. Telnet has better compatibility with Telnet BBSes and now can display black and white SIXEL graphics. DHCP has bug fixes that allow it to work with all of the various VirtualBox DHCP modes. The source code for the HTTP server is now included.
NetDrive now has a read-ahead mechanism, improving read performance when DOS reads multiple blocks at a time. A different mechanism ("large writes") leverages IP packet fragments to speed up writes that are larger than 1KB. While these changes improve read and write speeds on a local network, the impact is more dramatic when used on remote servers across the Internet. For example, a fast 386 class machine saw read speeds improve by 2.5x on a local network and 20x when connected to a remote server.
The "pass-through" packet driver feature of NetDrive now properly supports non-mTCP networking programs. Complex programs like NCSA Telnet can run while NetDrive is active with minimal impact to performance. Even Trumpet WinSock running under Windows 3.11 is able to use the pass-through feature, allowing you to add network attached storage while running programs like Netscape Navigator, all using the same packet driver you loaded in DOS.
Enjoy!
