As I posted elsewhere, I recently bought a used copy of Windows 3.11 on eBay, and I was attempting to copy the files from it onto a directory on my C drive today, but when I inserted Disk 1, I got a message from McAfee VirusScan saying that it detected an AntiCMOS virus on the disk. I got a similar message when I tried inserting Disk 2.

I contacted the seller about this and he apologized and said that he had checked to make sure that the disks ran in his computer and that his antivirus software (Norton AntiVirus 2003 Pro) hadn’t detected anything on the disks.

I’ve researched this virus, and all the sources I’ve found say that it only spreads when you attempt to boot a system from an infected floppy disk. If this is true, then copying the files from the floppy to a directory on C:\ should be harmless, but I’m still very worried about this.

I also can’t seem to find any sites that talk about how to clean infected floppies, just infected hard drives.

Could somebody please help? Please try to describe what I should do in as much detail as possible, since I’m very unfamiliar with dealing with viruses of this type.

Yeah, if it's a boot-only virus you won't get infected by copying the files. Copy all files to another floppies. Test the copy and then reformat (destroying) the infected floppies. If installation floppy is a booter, you'll have to clean it first, or run sys x: y: to transfer boot record.

Thanks, that sounds like a good plan.

I've copied the files from the eight floppies to eight corresponding folders on my computer and I'm currently copying them to eight blank floppies. McAfee didn't report any viruses on disks 4-8, but I'm going to reformat them as well just in case.

By the way: After reformatting, should I copy the installation files back to the original disks orjust disregard the disks and rely soley on the copies? (I'm just asking this to make sure it's safe; I'd like to keep a "legal" copy of Windows 3.11 in my posession)

test the copy first before formatting the old floppies!
If you format them you might loose some needed information.
(for example the label of the floppy)

Win3.11 will even install from a harddisk folder. Copy all files from the floppys into one directory.

I wouldn't trust floppies anymore. Especially nowadays.

I long ago converted my 3.5" and 5.25" floppies to images using Winimage and then store backups of those images on external HD's or optical media. MUCH more reliable than floppies.....and it's not like your going to need to install from floppy every day. 😉

Agreed. Besides, nowadays you can even boot from USB pendrives, so floppies aren't needed that much anymore.

Well, they're unreliable, slow, and hold too little data to be useful for most things these days. It's probably about time they died off.

I've got Windows 3.11 running successfully, so I suppose it's safe to format the original disks now. Thanks again for all the help (I'll probabalyhave to make a donation to express my gratiude properly).
