music plays during intro, but hangs on entry to game.exe, and if game.exe is executed directly, no music. What's up? And, compatibility links seem to be broken.

I wouldn't bother trying to run Ultima 6 natively, with or without VDMSound. Even if everything else is OK, it will be insanely fast due to processor-speed sensitivity.
It's best to run this in DosBox and adjust speed as needed.
And the compatibility database is still down due to a combination of SourceForge, PHP3, PHP4 and the involvement of humans.
speed can be handled by using keyboard commands; and dosbox doesn't give me music or sfx. In fact, the sfx don't seem to be working, and I don't know why.
Thanks for your help!

You mean DosBox right? U6 has no compensation for processor speed. Portions still work properly, but movement is still at turbo-speed.

You know there is no digital audio in the PC version of Ultima 6, right? No SoundBlaster option; just Speaker, AdLib, or MIDI. Sound effects in Ultima 6 are minimal to non-existent. Even the Amiga version didn't have these. This is because is had to use either FM or MIDI sounds to produce sound effects, which tended to not sound very good.
No, I meant using the numeric keypad to move, issue commands, etc. That makes the game take 1 turn per keypress, and that timing is solely up to me, therefore the game speed is entirely up to me.
Yes, I am quite aware that there was no "digital" sfx in U6. The SFX I refer to were the PC speaker ones.
DOSBox has REALsound emulation, and that's the only way you'll get anything resembling a real sound through PC-speaker. Not even Windows 9x can do REALsound.
Yes, it’s my fault.
Um, under win 9x, the sound in U6 works - and I coulda sworn that it worked under xp the last time I got the U6 bug up my butt, but I cannot remember. Anyways, the problem may or may not be VDMSound. However, the midi during the actual game is directly concerned with VDMS.
Thanks for all the help!
Late edit! I have fixed it. 'Twas all my fault. The read-only flag was set on the directory and all the files within. Once removed, vdms upgraded fully, it worked like a charm - 'cept the music seems a tad slow. But it seemeth to be a miracle that I get music at all! woo hoo!

Actually he was talking about just using the speaker for sound effects. Not quite like sampled sound, but still fairly complex.
The annoying thing is that I didn't even know it really did anything as it was always silent for me. Apparently the CPU was to blame. On my 1.7GHz Celeron it was completely silent, on a 566 Celeron, it was weak and often silent. On an actual 486-66 it ran fine. Annoying. Too bad it's not playing back on DosBox.
AdLib always worked fine for me.

Don't say I never did nuthin' for ya.

Forgot all about the "reconstruction" site. The first place to check for any PC version of Ultima. Unfortunately, for me, the "may not work for you" caveat is all-too-accurate. No effect at all.

I'd give you credit for finding the patch but you only appear as "Unregistered". *heh*
So be it. Thanks for the tip, "Unregistered".
